So I am about to have a $2000 budget to build myself a new box. My question is this:

2.2GHz A64 (skt 754) + 7800GTX + MSI K8N NEO3-F

or

2.2GHz A64 (skt 939) + X800XL + Asus A8N

AFAIK the difference, with same clock speed, between 754 and 939 should be minimal -- between 5-10% correct? Which would you buy and why?

939 for upgrade capability (x2)
X2 isn't anything special as far as gaming is concerned -- yet, and FX is too expensive

and dual channel ram
Not a good enough performance jump for the A64 to justify the cost between 754 and 939

Then oc the 3000+ (see sig)! ;)
I am going to be going to college, hence, I will be pretty strapped for cash. I want a decent -- at stock speeds -- box that will be completely under warranty in the case that something does happen.

Thanks for the comments, and realize I am just rebutting to your comments, not knocking them in anyway but they just don't fit my situation. If I had an extra $1K then it would be without question what my choice should be. :p

afaik there are no plans for the 7800gtx to be AGP and there are no pci-e socket 754 boards

for college then get the 754...in a few years you can get what was top of the line for 754....

then once you get your carreer goin go high end :)

Buy a 3000/3200 venice, oc it to 2.4.....it should be completely stable....then bump it down to 2.3....pocket the extra cash and still have a faster system.

Actually, that msi board does have pci-e.

The board he mentioned is PCI-E socket 754.

If it's between those two, and seems like gaming is a primary concern from the hefty graphics cards, get the config that lets you get a 7800GTX...there's not really any competing with that card right now.

I personally have no experiences with the PCI-E s754 boards, but they should be fine. I have a proposed system set-up.

Plextor SATA DVD burner: $88.99 (DVD burner )
Antec Sonata: $93.00 (Case )
WD 160gb SATA HDD: $91.00 (HDD)
Epox s754 PCI-e mobo: $83.00 (mobo )
Biostar 7800GTX: $543.00 (7800GTX )
Antec Truepower II 480w PSU: $104.99 (PSU )
Zalman CPU Heatsink: $43.99 (CPU HSF )
Artic Silver 5: $7.99 (AS5 )
2 Patriot 1gb sticks of DDR400: $114.75 each, $229.50 for both (RAM )
AMD A64 3200 2.2ghz s754: $190.00 (CPU )
WinXP Home: $88.95 (WinXP)

Total with shipping (assuming you live in US where Newegg doesn't charge tax): $1613.00

If you can get a Sonata II, go for it. By doing so, you would not need a PSU as the Sonata II comes with a 450w model. I only added a PSU since I figured that the 380w model that comes with the case would not be powerful enough. Also, if you wanted to go with stock cooling, then you would not need the CPU HSF and Artic Silver 5. You may want a bigger HDD depending on your needs. I chose a s754 system since there is not much performance difference between the sockets. Besides in a couple of years, AMD will likely come out with a new socket that replaces both s939 and s754. Also, that was the cheapest 7800GTX on Newegg; you may want a different one. Hey, with the money left over, you can buy a LCD monitor, Logitech MX1000, fancy keyboard, and good speakers.

Just my $0.02
