Hey guys, i was thinking why isnt there a thread designated to donating spare/old/new hardware to people willing and able to run them? I have a bunch of ram, HD's and other usefull old hardware I dont need. If this isnt a good idea then just tell me to shut up. :p

On a side note I have a Dual P3 board (Abit VP6) and a bunch of 256MB PC133 RAM sticks I have no use for. Can anyone use them to help the horde kick these diseases asses? LMK

:)

this sounds like a good idea... get the hardware to the people willing to pay the electric bill so it doesn't sit idle.

i personally would love to have a dual P3, but i don't have the money for procs ATM. i bet that FLECOM would love to take it off your hands, tho:D

Sounds good in theory; problem is, not too many techies want to donate equipment, most would rather let it rot in their closets than give it away for free.

Come on people, you are NOT going to get $100 for a Celeron 1.2 that you bought two years ago when it was the shiznit!

In the past when we had extra parts we just posted "free parts for folders". Usually the only requirement was to be a known folder for the horde. I started my farm with some old boards that relic was giving away. So I agree a dedicated thread would be nice for this purpose as long as they have already been folding for a while. On that note I can use a couple of sticks of that ram for sure. :D

While this may be true for some, there are others that would donate for the cost of shipping or even ask a reasonable price for their 2 year old celery 1.2.. :p
A thread like this could be good...

Well I see the free stuff threads but they often get lost in the thread movements. I just thought it would be a helpful idea to those not wanting to go through the selling portion of it when we know we arent gonna get and real money from it knowing its old and used. (Like me! :p )

and T-3 YGPM bout the RAM

I got stuff from RedShred once for the price of shipping...

The [H]orde is like a brotherhood. We help each other out. :D

The only thing I have that might be useful is an old motherboard. Gainward 5VPA. It's an old socket-7 board, and it had an AMD processor in it. I think it was a 233mhz. I never got it working, because I was unable to find drivers anywhere (this was before I learned to grab the 4in1 drivers from VIA's website). The processor got damaged accidentally, but the board works. One dimm slot has a broken clip on the end, but the other 2 slots seem to work. It has the old style AT keyboard port, and funky mouse/com ports.

Someone would have to be desperate for a slow folding box, but if someone does want it, I'd part with it for the cost of shipping.

Alot of us just watch the forum and if someone needs something and is good enough to ask about it, we will hook them up. I have both recieved and given this way and this group of folders is a closeknit bunch willing to help each other out.

That is one of the reason's I fold for team 33.

This is so old it's frightful.
Back in the day relic would get together a bunch of peeps to met in a Hooters and pass around used hardware.
Part of the difficulty is that most of us are so cheap that we put almost everything to work.
If someone needs something to fill out a system let them ask. The peeps who like to socialize need to plan some parties to get together at, have some refreshment, and brag about to the rest of us.

I have a fair bit of junk around the office and house...most not worth shipping, but if anyone is in the Atlanta area I could probably meet them.

Of the top of my head I have the following:

some ATX cases, probably 4 or 5
a couple of PIII slot 1 boards
a couple of PIII socket boards
maybe one or two dual PIII slot 1 boards (may need server case though)
one or two duron 600-750mhz procs
several 400-500 mhz slot 1 pIII procs
a couple of slow CD-ROMS
NICS
a few low end vid cards
some 4-10GB IDE hard drives
Maybe a few 9gb SCSI drives (some 68pin, some 80 pin SCA)
some 32 mb pc100 dimms

I may have others stuff, but can;t remember at the moment...

one of the main problems with this is their is no gaurantee that the hardware you send to someone is not going to end up on ebay 2 days later. Or they use it for something else.

If anyone has any working dual boards (P3 or up please) I would glad to take em off your hand and set em up for the horde (my apartment gives me "free" and "unlimited" electricity with my contract).

I used to fold hard for the other folding project last year and recently switched to F@H.

clicky my sig if you want to see my stats:

does that board support 133fsb PIII's? i have a bunch of 133fsb PIII's around here but all my dualie PIII machines are 100mhz fsb chipsets :(

i need something to replace my ageing webserver... its a dual PII 333 w/128mb PC66 ECC EDO... it meets deadlines, but just barely... i dont think its really worth running anymore... but i dont have a machine to replace it with...

so if you could send over that mobo and maybe a stick of ram i would be much obliged :)

That's why we usually only swap or donate to trusted folders who have been a part of the team for a while.

But even so it does require a bit of trust.

ok.. interstingly i got an idea about 2 months ago... that would work... the hardest part is to find a corp that will fund it... but start a non-profit organization for folding... this is rough, bare with me...

first you would need to talk to the power company... write a proposal.. say.. i want ot start this organization, it is to search for a cancer cure etc... all i need to get started is for you to donate free electicity.. you will be displayed as our sponsor on our ads and shit..

then you need a place to do it.. probably an actual commerical zoned building..

well shit i don't know how to start a non-profit organization.. but once it is started..

you get people to not donate, but lend, or what is a good word.. lend their equipment... they pay shipping, but have the satisfaction of knowing that their hardware is working for folding somewhere... if they want, they can request at any time to get their equipment back, and it can be shipped back to them... they could even recieve it back with a certificate saying how much they folded, for what team etc...

now.. thoughts for sponsorship would be as follows
get a psu company to sponsor... and make a huge psu that would power all the mobos at once.. they mobos would hang on the wall or tables or soemthing.. and they could even be put inside of some sort of air conditioning vent to keep them all running cool.. with plexi windows...
but possibly a psu company would be willing to donate their services and create either one huge psu or psus that can power 10 mobos at once, just to show that they are civic minded, able to build high quality psu's, increase brand loyalty among the folding community etc...

the biggest requirement would be power though, and effecieny of the power... becasue a huge folding farm, would use a lot of electicity... well.. i bet a commercially zoned building would cost a lot.. and it would need employees etc... but the idea just needs to be pitched to the right sponsors...

also.. this could be an interesting way to develop some things sofrware wise..
a version of *nix could be developed that is made solely to fold... nothing else... somoene could be hired full time to develop software, the website, etc... then everything that is developed can be given back to the community...

when peopel donate their equipment, they can designate if they want it to be used for team [h] 33 or whatever they want... then smoene can design a database, and software that can track each computer's statistics, and the owner of that equpment can log into the website in real time and check the stats of their donated hardware...

if something dies then if can be shipped back in a little, glass enclosed thing with a plaque saying... this mobo gave its life in the fight against cancer... it blah blah blah..

so yeah..

anyone in the DC area want to start this?

i think i am serious, but i am not sure...

exactly as yogi said...KNOWN folders, people who have been seen posting around here, etc.

I think the vast majority of us are too considerate and honest to get something for free under the pretense of helping humanity just to sell it to someone a few days later.

Speaking from personal experience, i myself would be up for some free hardware even it it was JUST for folding.

Currently i have these folding:
AMD athlon 1.6ghz
PIII 0.8ghz
P2 350mhz
P2 233mhz
P1 233mhz

As you can see..... i willingly keep the 3 old ones on............ (one is my server).

I mean, if someone hooked me up with a nice dualy PIII i would Snatch that in a second and set it up in my bed room.

Problem is, im a little skeptic with paying shipping at the moment......... and that's why i would be mostly interested in people around me... MA, USA ^_^

Sounds like a great idea

scottatwittenberg, that's a very good idea actually, i like it ^_^.

maybe bust out a few solar panels to help create some "free" power ^_^ (i think it woudl be able to provide quite a bit of power on sunny days)

Im would venture a guess and say stanford University might even help out a little............. who knows in what ways....... but.... you know. (or am i just dreaming?)

And also......... i don't know about the PSU with the motherboards on tables or walls idea............ i would just keep them in their case and connect a 120v power cable to them.

Its also safe to assume it would'nt need much in the way of heating during the winter :D

How would you keep track of each computer though? assign it a number or something? Like if jimmy wants his computer back, he can just say, ok, i want Computer #10101010101 returned........ and that computer number will have all the information on it (or keep it in a database).

Also, instead of just "lend"....... give them the option of donating a computer, or "lending" their spare computers. ( really think you will get ten times more donated computers then lent computers)

I like the idea though.

ill take free stuff :)

actually, i have 512 mb ram + case with psu + vid card + 2.4c sitting here doing nothing. i have no money to buy even a cheapo mobo for it. sad huh. anyways, ill take a p4 mobo if anyone has one ;)

BTW: WOLF hook me up with one of those 4-10 gb HDDS. tell me what shipping will be to 33133. that with the p4 mobo will make a box. thanx

PM an addy and I will check shipping...

I need an XP processor, 128mb DDR stick, and a cheap PCI video card to finish out another folding box. Right now I have an antec case with 350w PS, Asus nforce2 board, cd drive, 40gb hard drive, kb, mouse. I have a few bucks to spare and can pay more than shipping costs if someone can help out.

DooKey, I can get you a pci vid card, but I think that's all I have out of that list.

Celerons were never the shiznit. ;)

And actually I think most of the regular posters gladly give/swap hardware if they think it's going to help someone else out. Most people come to the point where they realize it's no use keeping that old 10mb isa nic around anymore but that someone else happens to have a use for it. It's pretty much worthless in fs/ft or ebay so why not donate it to the [H]orde?

celerons never the shiznit? what about back in the day with the 300a's that people were overclocking to...what was it, 600mhz?

then someone got even more creative and found a way to run them as duallies, although it was quite a trick to get it to work...

DOH!!

PM me with a shipping cost and however much else you'd like to go with it and we'll hopefully get another box online.

Sorry for the delayed response (long assed weekend)... Anyways, Yes my board does support 133FSB.

Click Me

If it looks like something you want just hit me with a PM. :)

If anybody wants an AMD K6-2 400 that will OC to 500Mhz, send email to me @jasone002@yahoo.com. Processor only, no mobo.

I have 2 K6-III+ 450, a K6-III 350 and a K6-II 533, and 2 super 7 boards, one SIS based and one ALI based. I can't vouch for the working condition of the boards, they worked when I took them out of service, at least a year ago, maybe closer to 2.

Kinda hoping I win the free stuff from NewEgg(do enough business with them), got 2 UPS's in my bedroom, climate controlled to 65 degrees year round. Only got 2 pentium rigs folding from here. Newest does SuperPrime 1 mil iterrations in 41 seconds, not bad for a pentium. Got a box full of stuff waiting to fold. Got an Electrician willing to give me 3 dedicated 30 amp lines to my bedroom for a carton of smokes. He's my brother, so I have to trust him, sorta. What I need to pull this off is a server tower, with 2 PSU's, totalling 750+ watts of power, to move current rig into, and bump it back up to a 3.75 P4. Use the current case, and PSU for another rig. Tower can be beat up, gotta hold at least 5 HD's, and meet power needs.

I have several scavengers looking for this case, but even crap goes high dollar, used. I work in a sheet metal shop and can program all equipment, so if you can't help with a quick solution, blueprints for a 5-10 disk tower, with 2 PSU's, would be appreciated. I can deal with the PSU tuning issue when necessary. ATX format, SATA support would help. Got an 80 GB caviar gathering dust, help me give it a good home, and get it folding.

I only have a windowbox garden of 8.15GHz, going for the [H]orde, but I still managed to crack the top 1000 on the team in 6 weeks, I want to get to the top 500 without breaking the law.

God I love having free electricity with my appartment 8).

having alot of foldin boxen becomes alot cheaper 8).

Ill have to dig around and see if I hvae any spare gear.

if only i would hvae known about this 2 years ago when i lived in a dorm... i would have stacked up 10 computers in my closet and put them to work... and i would have thought about it like i was taking advantage of free electicity.. it would have been moer like getting my moneys worth out of those expensive ass shitty dorms...

well, since no one had a p4 mobo to spare, i jumped on the hot deals forum and saw tigerdirect had a soyo barebones for 30 bux after MIR. jumped on it, i should have it folding in a couple of hours.

thanx to wolf for offering an HDD. but i got one locally.

I have an old 433 celeron, a mobo for it, 3 monitors, 2 HDDs, a CD-ROM, an HP case and PSU, and some old SDRAM and NICs if anyone local sees this and wants it.

If your dorm was nearly as bad as mine, you might have run into a problem. I definitely tried to do this with Seti (before I came to my senses and started folding ;) ) then lights out.... Had to take them offline within 2 days because the maintenance people got sick of resetting the breaker (2-3 times a day).

BTW, sorry to be off topic. I couldn't help myself.
