I am so stoked to see the H results of Quake4 using thier specific brand of testing. To see how the most current and last generation of video cards meet the Q4 challenge.

I really want to buy this game and yet I am curios how my rig and others will do.

Keep up the great work Brent!!!

How is the Q4 engine different from the Doom 3 engine?

I was never a fan of Doom, but I am a Quake fan. I'd be interested to play this game also.

I knew that it is built on the D3 engine. I did not think that they were clones but some additions and optimizations were made. I could be wrong.

They've had to change it a lot from Doom3 I would think. I know they've changed the basic gameplay mechanics for consoles (infinite ammo, health, other dumb down features etc) so would would think they've optimized the games engine for consoles as well.

Well for one thing the game is not too dark. You can actually enjoy the graphics this time around. Also it looks like they added some nice eye candy and used some features in the engine that was unused in doom 3. They are using better physics that's for sure judging from the videos. The multiplayer video has me drooling as it looks like a souped up Quake 3 arena. Got mine preordered and got a cool tshirt with it too ;)

Hopefully the game doesn't live up to its bad reviews... that would suck

Anyway I would like to see benchmarks comparing this game to Doom 3. It has the same engine so perhaps similar benchmarks?

Things graphic wise have changed a little between the vanilla D3 engine and Q4's modified engine. Quake 4 will be a bit heavier on the GPU.

That shows from the sweet gameplay footage I have seen. :)

Wtf,l reading the original post you'd have hought they already did tests, i was on the front page looking for benchmarks.

Sweet, can wait for it. Maybe the x1800xt 512mb will do better in Quake 4 with more textures?? Remember Doom 3's ultra settings?

I assume it would be when ATI releases the 5.11 drivers? Well, here's to hoping anyway because that should be very soon.

I can tell you from lots of play time on Q4 multiplayer (at quakecon) it does look like Doom3 with better graphics, yet the gameplay is remarkably similar to Q3A in speed and response.
As for how it will perform on an older system, your guess is as good as mine.

The multiplayer gameplay alone IS what sets it apart from Doom3;

... and in a GOOD way.

You will need to upgrade to duel core processor and SLI video cards to play Quake 4. I know this because I'm a computer professional.

No really, I don't think they changed much of anything from the Doom engine, probably it's going to be like average 10fps decrease from Doom 3 because of the outdoor scenes and intense action.

I love a good video card "face of". To see these new to technologies fighting head to head.

Brent will you have a 512mb nvida board to use? Even if most gamers will not use this beast in a real life scenario it would be fun and interesting to see.

For years to come many games will use the Q4 engine. I think that your benchmarks can give us a good and general indication of what to expect form many future games as it pertains to needed upgrades.

What is scary is that even my rig may have to dummy down the setting some. :(

You never know, by the time Q4 actually hits the stores ...you could have already upgraded to an X2 processor and sli 7800GTX cards (maybe even 512 MB versions by then)

Will this feature ATI's 5.11 driver, then, with its promised performance boosts?
