A few days ago I noticed a thread (http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=874051) stating that XYZ review site does thi better and the thread quickly spiraled out of the motherboard classification. This got me thinking that a lot of people here at the [H] have some really cool ideas on what should be reviewed, and how it should be reviewed. Some would like to see monitors reviewed, some would like to see more periphials reviewed etc. etc. So my idea is this. We add a new category to the Forums called "User Reviews". Under this heading, users will submit reviews to the admins of this category for review and the admins will choose to publish those reviews that are well presented or offer some new and creative perspective. Between all of the users here, we should be able to cover almost anything computer related. This would also be an excellent way for us would-be writers to sharpen our skills and help out the [H]Forums.

Let me know what you think!!!

That is a perfect example of a review that may make the User Reviews section. The problem is that even when searching, you are likely to get a ton of garbage. Having someone review the reviews would really help IMHO.

People already do reviews. For example here's a review of the Viewsonic VP201B. It's in an appropriate forum and the search function finds it easily enough.

That said I voted no.
Exactly. Same thing people do over at the PSU forum when a new one comes out. No need to make a seperate section because then it would be difficult to find all the montior review or etc within the review section anyway

Hell ya i got some hardware, tools, parts, etc that i can review.

So you basically want a Forum that is "User Reviews" with subcategories? If so, what subcategories?

I would do:

hardware
peripherals
cooling
cases and accessories
general software
games

I think that would be a great idea, one of the best ideas I've heard in fact! That would be great.

actually this idea makes a lot of sense you know...

voted yes.

First i was like... "User reviews on the [H]ocp frontpage ????....no way, [H]staff only".
But as a review forum it might be a good idea, though any pictures should be hosted on [H], linking to pictures from all over the web quickly produces a lot of red x's. Hosting them on the [H] either as files or attachments would be better.

Any submission to the review forum should be moderated before posted, you make the thread, then a [H]staff member approves it before it's viewable by others.

And i wouldnt like to see all sorts of wannabe hardware sites spamming their own reviews with their logo's/domain names on the pictures or in the text. It should be for the [H] only.

Spot-on true-ness.

How about the opposite, a sub forum for reviews for each software/hardware forum? That way when you are looking in a particular forum you can check for any new reviews.

To be perfectly honest, I don't think it should happen until more people start putting more reviews in the forums. If the forums start getting flooded with reviews, it would then make sense to spend the time to organize for future review posts.

If this were enforced, then I would say yes. Otherwise it will degenerate into arguments and flame wars just like you already get in the video card (...etc) forum.

Personally speaking, I'd just create a forum named "Articles" where an article is linked to and people comment away on it--basically how Arstechnica does it.

That could work, but then it would just be a list of references to other [H] threads and articles.

Perhaps movies should also be incorporated?

I do have a couple reviews brewing from games I've been playing, I think this would be a great idea.

EDIT: Another subscription service? ;)

yes, exactly my thought.
maybe in each section, there could be a subsection for reviews, kinda like how there's a section for nvidia and ati in the video card forum.

i like this idea alot. what gets me sometimes is that i can never find the review i want really. a user would be more tuned into the other users and would probably put up better reviews. also, i notice that many reviews have graphics card reviews on systems with like, 2gigs of ram and fx-55's and everything.. i want to see reviews on "normal" hardware. a user review would more likely show me the more realistic side of computer upgrading

I am in agreement as well.

Remember: I really think that the goal of this excercise/project should be to encourage creative reviews. As a result, not just HW and SW products should be reviewed....but for instance, people could write articles on setting up a home network creatively, or hooking up a home theatre and their experiences with it. The bottom line would be to chronicle the impact that technology has on us and give us all concepts on how other people are tech'd out. Sometimes this will be a review on a vid card, other times it will be how someone transcodes and archives all the shows from their HTPC. Other articles could be how to gracefully integrate an ipod into your car, or how to make your music collection available online (for you only of course) for streaming it anywhere.

Other concepts could be

Setting up your system to auto notify you of certain events via email
Setting up a basic secure website and forum for friends and family
Starting a software and game database to keep track of 100's of titles
Best uses for old hardware.

Literally ANYTHING tech related can be touched upon, and so long as the average reader gets something out of it....(even if it's just a chuckle) and it's well written then it can be published by an admin.

The only constants I think that are needed are

Why? Why did the writer decide to undertake this project/review
What? What need did it help fill?
What? What was used to remedy or enhance this situation?
Was it worth it? aka, was the hardware good, the database adaquate, the ipod implemenation effective etc.
Things that could make it even better!
THINGS NOT TO DO! or issues to watch out for.

Anyway, I am rambling, but I really think that we should push this! With some help from the [H]Forum admins...I really think this could happen.

I agree that having a user review forum would be an excellent idea, however having it moderated is an almost necessity.

I think this is a good idea. While it will most likely create more work for Kyle and the already overworked mods, it will help generate more traffic to [H] with fresh perspectives and the prestige of having your own personal review hosted by a large site. There obviously would have to be some guidelines but I think this is a great idea.

I think is a good idea but at the same time in my case when I need somebody's opinion I just go to the proper forum and post a question and ask for opinions on a particular item. Also remmember that there is stuff out there that people haven't even tried so is going to be kind of hard for people to give their opinion. That is why I read the reviews when I buy from newegg or any of the other places even though I try not to make my decision only on reviews because what if a specific item does not have reviews then you either have to take a chance and buy it or not buy it at all. So I don't know, I think I'm undecided on my vote.

well, wait a minute... I wouldn't have just anyone be able to write a review and post it whenever they want... Prolly should submit the review to a mod or someone first to make sure the content is postable. or something along those lines... but this is a very good idea.

Yeah,
That's been the idea all along. A mod will have to read and approve the review. That way, no brand bashing, inappropriate language, blurry pics, or just plain nonsense gets posted.
