Anybody looking at this?

I'm of the generation where the best games were the combat sims and space sims. I was raised on Wing Commander and have been dying for a game where I could use my joystick.

I've heard mixed reviews on this, this is basically an arcade game through and through. There's even a mode where you turn off the comptuer assist and it basically goes to a acrobatic 3rd person camera for you to pull of arcade maneuvers.

Seems very console based as well, I hear it runs ridiculously fast maxed out on 2 year old hardware.

there's a long thread about the demo a few pages back.

I just beat the game co-op with a friend. It was a ton of fun... a good change of pace from the fps' we normally play. There are ~20 missions, and they're pretty varied.

BUT, after a while you might get bored cause the missiles lock on really easily... and you have TONS of them. The game would be so much better if there were levels were everyone was forced to use only their machineguns. You can change the difficulty, but it only limits your ammo, not the guys attacking you. So while you're trying to gun down a guy, you'll have 5 seeking missiles on your tail...

nevertheless, it's a blast with co-op

Yeah, do these jets really carry over 100 missiles? It's a bid ridiculous isnt' it?

you arent even carrying just one type of missile... so you literally never run out...

if you haven't played the demo, give that a try first. The game runs great on all my computers (even on a 300$ laptop...)

If you loved all those Tie Fighters and Freespaces as much as I did I have a good advice for you - stay as far away from hawx as possible you won't like it.
The cockpit view is pretty nice but this game gets ugly as soon as you turn on outside camera.

But yeah try it yourself it doesn't cost anything to check the demo just don't expect miracles from it.

I would kill for a new free space or x-wing/tie fighter game! And imagine what they could pull off with todays technology!? Massive galactic battles with swarms of frigates, mother ships and hundreds of fighters! Multiplayer could be mind boggling!

I've been playing this the last few days...and...I guess it's good. It's mindless entertainment. Not really my style, but I guess I could say I'm enjoying it.

Graphics are a little sub-par / low poly count on the planes is a little disappointing.

If you like Freespace, you must download the free source mod, Eternal Silence.

Its a mix of FPS fighting with Freespace flight simulation. Not together.... (you fly ships [freespace mode], then get off [fps mode]) Its much easier to watch than to explain.....

Its an amazing mod, tons of fun. I'm totally addicted, especially since I can fly with my Sidewinder Freestyle Pro :)

If you're looking for a more sim than pure arcade experience you will hate HAWX. If you like Ace Combat style games you might like it as it really feels like Ubisoft tried to emulate the mindless fun of AC.

Oh boy... glad you mention that

I was a huge fan of an old F-18 simulator, was kinda hoping this hawk would be similar to that

I wonder if theres any new realistic sim these days. Except for Microsoft Flight Sim of course, wouldn't want to spend that much just to fly an F-18 (that have to be purchased separately as an expansion itself) :p

It mostly has to do with money. There isn't a huge amount of money in flight sims anymore. Its a niche genre ruled by MS Flight Sim. I'd love to see another game that was like Combat Flight Sim (I think thats what it was called).

So, I suck at this game, rocking my keyboard. Can somebody tell me how the hell you beat the Air Force One level???

Those dumbass enemies keep blowing it up 3/4 way through the mission.

Yes seems very interesting and great :) Have not tried the demo yet which I will be doing this weekend(but seen lots of gameplays of it). It looks very similar to Acecombat4, which I used to always play around the time it came out on a ps2 :)

great game. was glad to see my xbox 360 controller worked with the demo. funny thing about the assist-off was watching my girlfriend almost puke.

The only contemporary sim I know of is Black Shark.

man, if lucasarts would make a re-vamped x-wing or tie-fighter I would be in heaven. I still remember playing those on my old 386 with 4mb of ram and dos 5.0. They don't even need to change the game, just take the originals, update all the graphics and sounds, and add some new campaigns.

Knowing modern lucasarts, though, they'd somehow butcher it into some horrible bastard child of jar-jar-binks and hayden christensen.

What difficulty are you playing on? Use the multi-missiles to lock onto multiple aircraft at a time. Try to use a plane that has a high top speed so you can reach the enemies faster before they get to Air Force one or so you can speed to the rescue. Otherwise, equip all-aspect missiles to lock on effortlessly.

Keyboard is damn hard to use in this game. You just can't turn and roll fast enough simultaneously. A joystick works well (you need to use the pivot feature). It's also a console game so controllers work well. Setup L/R for roll left and roll right. Use the analog stick for yaw left and right and pitch up and down. When you need to turn, roll into it and max out yaw in that direction. The more your fighter is aligned behind the enemy, the better your chance of missile hit.
