I currently have the stuff for it. but I dont have the SB5100 yet... I ordered one today :) *SB5101 cant be hacked at this time, or so I'm told.*

i wonder why someone would make this story up. i heard the sb501 can be hacked.

i just bought a premod dcm325 off of ebay for pretty cheap. they say it is identical to the motorola sb5100 but for a better price. cost me around 50 bucks shipped! should be here in a few days! cant wait

really? I got the sb5100 for $30 ship.

Actually, there is. I picked up a Linksys cable modem off of craigslist last summer which I am currently using. When I called in to activate it, the guy on the phone said, "Oh, that's strange, this modem shows up as already being activated." The guy I bought it from said it had not been used for over a year. I wish I would have plugged in the modem first before activating it...

Anyway, I would be more interested in this hack if my neighbors did not have open wireless networks and my cable internet rate increases beyond $30 / month although I will probably be moving to Wimax next.

When I worked at Comcast a little over 2 years ago. All of your access information, your upload speed, download, etc were stored on the boot file on your modem. Now by a simple search of your MAC address they could see your modem and your boot file...

They could also see this by the node if they wanted to but the system wasn't very linear or user friendly, though I'm sure there were option in the background to attempt to catch / disable users who would use such a hack. The whole thing is, if you change your MAC address then your modem can reconnect as long as it doesn't "accept" any of Comcast's "You don't have an CHSI account" boot files...

I would hope that maybe I am wrong and that there was even more prevention software in the background of Comcast's network but I'm sure you won't be surprised to hear how archaic Comcast's infrastructure truly is...

too bad comcast security is a joke! I've been saying it for years! it's so simple to bypass those bandwidth limits and speed caps! SOOO SIMPLE!

You know, A few years ago I found something about hacking cable modems, software etc. I was too scared to do it (or try) incase I screwed the firmware up on my modem.

And then I forgot about it for 3 or so years. I havn't thought about hacked cable modems ever since until now when I saw it on hardocp.com

Now I am thinking about it, and its made me interested in looking at it more. Tinkering around with it etc.

I think its funny that they claim to have an arrest going, and I am on cablehack.net's website right now reading the forums (of a website I didn't know about untill about 5 min ago) and I think now of how many ten's of thousands of people now know about it, and like me might be interested in taking alook at it.

Maybe they shouldn't of advertised it on wired.com period?

I also just typed in onestep zup in google found a website, and downloaded some software to take alook at.

I used to work for insight Broadband (part of AT&T) and it was sooo easy to catch a hacked modem.. The cisco ubr routers can query a modem and dislplay whatever the config file has set for upload and download speeds. Someone smarter than I wrote a pearl script that checked each ubr router at each headend via snmp and reported any modems that didnt have the proper config settings. We had a list of 5-10 people each day and they were banned permanently from the network and could never order internet from us again if caught no matter what their reason.

How can these hacks to the config file go undetected when it is so easy to query them for their config files and screen them out as I mentioned above? Changing the mac wouldnt allow you on because if the mac wasnt registered you get a 10. ip and are routed to the account setup page...

I was wondering about how people said it's possible. Made no sense. You would have to clone your modems mac address identically to someone else's that's already allowed on the network and then the ISP would have to notice two users with the same modem mac address rather quickly. Or am i missing something here???

Like I mentioned earlier, Time Warner Cable only allows you to use their modems. So I would've had to do this hack to the modem they gave me.I get 10 megs down. 2 megs up for $30 a month right now so I'm fine, I guess.:(

I was looking at the Sigma firmware a few months ago, and from what I recall, I believe the new firmware can mimic the right one, and report to comcast that the firmware and config files are correct. I didn't research it in depth, and I may be totally wrong, but check out the sigma firmware website for more info.

haha..interesting never heard of this linux load balancing thing
who'd want to have a 40-50meg connection, thats silly talk
i only wish i knew :(

I would like to see a response from the person that sells these modems. How do they avoid detection ?

your right, I worked at a road runner tech, even if your cable modem was hacked, the lack of modern workstations, and trained ppl that would care about something that minor, keeps anyone from really pursuing it. (but downloading porn at 1500kBps does raise some red flags)
besides, the internet is just a series of tubes...:p

So basicly what your saying is dont buy it , the isp will ban you? sorry not very network literate.

the latest firmwares can report false info to the router. so they think you are using the correct config file. but it doesn't matter because they can't even see you on the network.

haha lol

I guess I'm lame, but I don't think theft of services is very cool... especially considering some of you are confessing to all but destroying QOS for everyone on their node...

it sucks that this is getting so much attention becuase now ISP's might actually do something about this, but i doubt it...

that being said, you guys that are uncapping and doing all sorts of not nice things, thats not very nice... you are affecting people on your node and stuff like that is whats going to run the fun for everyone

Interesting, we see the guy pop up here and at Wired posting comments to defend himself, but his web store isn't open anymore. I wonder if news travels faster than subpoenas...or even worse, warrants.

I also have the same issue, when I set the MAC and stuff, it would download very fast, but the modem would keep rebooting, what can I do! I bought that modem almost a year ago and for the lack of time I've been unable to do a more throughly research...

Guys, The details are too many. IF you use a hacked cable modem you will get caught. It is only a matter of time and some providers will prosecute you for it and some will just ban you for life.. Is it really worth the risk ? They can report bogus speeds to the routers all they want and it is still a breeze to sniff out a hacked modem. Most isp's have a security/Network ops group that takes care of this as I used to work in the Insight noc.. The guy is scamming people plain and simple.

It's been years and no one has busted down the door yet. Nice!

THREAD NECROMANCY!!! Did you even look at the last post date before the one you just made? 1-19-2009? :p

Not quite the record around here but... oh hell, now I'll get accosted for this followup... damn. :D

Can't believe I read the whole fucking thread just now... and then I get to your post. I need to read dates. Thought this sounded familiar. Fuck me.

I started doing the same, but on p. 2, I decided to check out the date and saw that it's over 1.5 y/o, so I skipped to the last page to see why it was bumped. :D

Fuck...I did the same thing. Was a good read though.
