X79 is going to be a flop on the desktop IMO. Save your pennies for Ivy Bridge.
 
It will be kinda like Sandy Bridge vs Gulftown now after IB is released. Platform only for people who really need those 6 cores.

Your both right on that one. I don't think BD will be in the position to compete with the current SB offerings let alone the upcoming architecture. When someone creates something fantastic they are shouting from the roof tops to let everyone know about it. AMD sure has been quiet with this pending release. I hope I am wrong and BD actually creates a better CPU market for us, we need it right now.
 
Ivy bridge (or at least a similar 22nm cpu) will be on X79 as well in LGA2011 format...

But you won't need it. X79 is overkill for all but people who have 10+ hard drives in complex RAID arrays and run Tri-SLI/CFX at the same time.

Sandy Bridge already has outstanding bandwidth compared to Lynnefield (southbridge constraint has been fixed), and Ivy Bridge will get official support for 3-way SLI (8x4x4 v3.0) via the Z77 chipset:

That means you can feed 3 powerful graphics cards, and STILL have plenty of bandwidth for your RAID arrays to tap in the southbridge. I see no reason to go with anything more powerful.
 
I read the full article last night. The stuff they removed was not really much just a lot of text walls about MSI settings and overclocking and crap. Stuff Intel probably wasnt ready to share.

South Bridge still only has 6 ports and only 2 are Sata III or has that changed?
 
Seems the best approach is the one I took...

Buy a good Z68 board with a cheap 2500K/2600K and replace it with an Ivy Bridge 1155 chip when they become available. Maybe Intel will get it together by then and figure out how to get USB3 and more SATA3 ports into their chipsets. Even better would be if Intel can get rid of all the SATA2 ports and go all SATA3. Same with USB3. I'd rather have like 8 USB3 ports on my board instead of 20 USB2 that I'll never use that many of anyway.

X79 and SB-E is a totally forgettable waste of effort.
 
Honestly ..... X79 isnt that bad. I believe at this point after reading the article that was posted in full that more folks, like 95% of people, who adopt this new chipset and chips will get the K version, the lower model 6 core. I cant imagine an extra .5mb of cache per core is going to make a largely noticable difference except in the most excruciating torturous applications that most enthusiast users will probably never use.

To me a $500'ish 6 core with 12MB cache chip and $400-$500 enthusiast board is not cost prohibitive when you have:

40 PCIe 2.0 (maybe 3.0 with bios flash down the road) lanes
2 more cores that are even more optimized on the ridiculously powerful sandy architecture
More cache per core
Overclockability past 5.0ghz on a cheap ass close loop self contained boxed product water cooler.
Quad Channel DDR which has psychotic bandwidth (yeah yeah dont say it isnt noticable - not the point)
8 DIMM Support for 64GB Ram
QPI links for SMP applications
SSD Caching
oh and again 40 lanes of PCIe

I can run my SAS 6gps enterprise Adaptec Card and totally OWN the whatever Intel was going to use anyways and still have 32 lanes for my Quad GPUs I run.

So Yeah Im okay with the expenditure. I just do not want to repeat the P67/Z68 bullshit over again.

So will we have to wait for 9-12 months before they release the Z77 chipset which might be a better option? Or will it be a better option?

USB 3.0 has been working fine for me since day 1 using that little aftermarket chip on the board. Yeah supported would be nice but then again last I checked USB 3 is used by most for what... .transferring a movie here and there and then you turn your disk back off again? A little aftermarket chip cant do that for you? It has been for me and with great success.

According to the preview the Sandy-E 6 core @ 5.2 ghz was much faster than the 2600K. Probably due to some of the architecture refinements as well as new quad channel memory controller.

Lastly whats the freaking fret over PCIe 3 not being there? What is INTEL supposed to do? There are no GPUs available from nV and AMD to test with. And in all honestly we are still trying to close the bandwidth gap on GPUs with PCIe 2.0. I have yet to see a system where a card is fully saturating, with a measureable 100%, PCIe 2.0 16 lanes. Hell I would bet my HD 6990 is not even saturating 8 lanes with both GPUs. Just stating the obvious. Everyone wants world peace but no one wants to go to war to achieve it first. Unreal or should I say over expectant expectations is all it appears right now with people.

It also appears that most people that are commenting on this or that have already purchased a 2600K/2500K or are rocking a 1366 extreme or 6 core chip already. There isnt going to be much a difference for you. However for those that run quad/TRI Gpus, want 32GB or more of RAM, and are upgrade because they are on Core2/AMD Phe II or whatever and want to get something bigger and better. Plus who knows what IVY will bring to the table for this chipset. P67 and Z68 Ivy I can only imagine will still be limited for the hardcore true SLI and xFire more than 2 cards folks.

8x raid card goes where if you're using the 3 slots for SLI? Even with two card SLI you're still stuck with a 4x slot. Is a 4x PCIe 3.0 electically compatible with all 8 lanes on a PCIe 2.0 card or does the card revert to only 4x?
 
Yeah there wasn't really anything interesting in what was removed. I guess someone didn't want their thunder stolen though.

Not if you are using a motherboard like EVga SR2 when the 3 version comes out or that one, I cant remeber the name, that MSI released that had every slot on the board as an x16 slot for the socket 1366 platform.

But for mainstream middle range 2011 boards you are probably dead on right.

For you, maybe. For those of us that need/want something a little more... substantial, SB-E is where it's at.
 
Do any of the Sandy Bridge-E CPU's have the built in GPU?

Do any of them lack the on chip / die GPU?
 
Unless you are spending big bucks for the 6 core I don't see much reason to get this over 1155
 
There is NO gpu on die in E.

They scrapped the gpu to add 2 more cores plus a host of better shit.
 
SB-E is not really (just) a gamer board or mid-level enthusiast chipset, nor is it intended to replace Sandy Bridge. It is a workstation / high end desktop trickle down of a primarily server chipset.

I for one am very glad to have the option to get more PCI-E lanes and DIMM slots in a mobo, along with 6 core SB CPUs, and don't understand the defensiveness. It does everything SB does (sans integrated GPU / Quick Sync), just more / better. I bought a "workstation" SB mobo because I needed the extra slots, and now that I have 4 DIMMs populated, I would need to swap out memory to expand, which seems like a waste, and 8GB DIMMs are still expensive. Plus 6 core K-versions of Sandy Bridge CPUs are a nice option.

There are lots of engineers, programmers, graphics / design / CAD professionals, not to mention high-end enthusiasts who will be very happy with Sandy Bridge E, until the next big thing arrives. More is better - that's progress.
