Starting 9/13/04 you can pre-order your copy of what will most likely be the hottest online game to hit the market in quite some time .. Guild Wars. www.guildwars.com

Some of you may not have heard of it yet... if not here is your formal introduction. This game was created by the same people who helped create the Warcraft, Starcraft, and Diablo series at Blizzard before leaving the company over a year ago to work on their own. I was following WoW and was excited to get it, however .... once I found this, I changed direction.

Here are a list of a few goodies the game offers ... (By the way its a form of MMORPG)

No monthly fee
ONE GIANT SERVER
Streaming updates in the background (no server downtime)
Amazing ingame graphics
Combat/Skill based gameplay (as opposed to most MMORPGS that focus on time spent playing)
Extensive PvP action
Good Solo gameplay
Expansion every 6-8 months.

People are hailing it already, and it really looks impressive. If you've been somewhat interested in MMOGs but are turned away by monthly charges.. this is worth a try. Check out a few of these screen shots below ...

Anyone else planning on getting it and/or the pre-order ?

I'll be purchasing it when it comes out.. I'm not one for preorders though. Only two games I've ever preordered are Halo 2 and Doom 3. And that's cause it's sort of a gift from someone.

This game does look badass. And ya gotta respect the guys that are making it. I hope they do well with their new company.

Agreed. The only game I've ever pre-ordered was Doom 3. I do however plan on pre-ordering GW mainly because I guarantee myself a spot in the upcoming beta events.

The beta events are held on the first weekend of everymonth until release (2/05 projected). I've sort of lost interest in CoH and WoW now.. so I'm just laying in wait for GW to hit, doing my best to get by lol.

Wow, I have heard about this game in passing but have never seen anything. This game could give EQ2 a run for its money.

If the quality and replay value is as good, if not better than Diablo 2, I'm in. I played Diablo 2 since its beta for at least 2 years straight with a little CS on the side. I hate paying monthly for games, so this game already sounds tight. I read a little bit about it in the FAQ's and it sounds really bad ass. Everyone in the world connects to 1 server and there isn't a bunch of different realms. Yet there isn't any kinda spawn camping like in other MMORPG's. You can get random people or friends and do a co-op mode type thing where its just your group going around and killing shit... kinda like making your own game in Diablo 2.

To me it sounds like Diablo 2, but instead of connecting to a channel and creating your own game, that channel is a village that you can trade and pick up quests. Go off and do quests or have huge guild duals. Hopefully it will run well on my comp if I do decide to pick this one up.

From their site ...

What are the system requirements for Guild Wars?

The final system requirements have not yet been determined, but currently we have set the following as minimum system specifications for those involved in our Guild Wars Alpha Test:

Windows XP/2000/ME/98
800 MHz Pentium III or equivalent
256 MB RAM
ATI Radeon 8500 or GeForce 3 or 4 MX with 32MB of video memory
500 MB hard drive space
Internet connection
DirectX 8.0

Recommended System Specs:

Windows XP/2000/ME/98
Pentium III 1GHz or equivalent
512 MB RAM
ATI Radeon 9000 or GeForce 4 Ti Series with 64MB of video memory
500 MB free hard drive space
Internet connection
---

I did hear recently on a fansite forum that the devs just upped the minimum requirements a bit or so. Either way it doesn't require a beafy pc, but with a good rig you can crank up the settings and get some nice eye candy.

Gamespot a few good movies you can check out. If you do not have a Gamespot account, click the stream option for a free download.

I'm planning to buy it once it goes live, but not going to preorder it.

Gonna be a toss up to see which game I play more, GW or WoW. Both look like a lot of fun and have a solid design team and company backing them up.

How is repeatedly hitting monsters like with 3 animations x repeat fun?

How is this fun?

I've played Diablo II for years. It's fast-paced and fun, but now it has worn me out. GW looks a bit slower and... cartoonish and... gay? I don't know but the *look at the guy with the axe bash a monster 3982 times!!!* isn't fun at all.

-J.

I dunno, I played the E3 demo and it was mediocre at best. The combat was bland, as well as the way you can group with other players.

You run around and go into a little zone where you can join a team and then you 4 (max) go on missions.
meh
pretty though

This game is ok, but it's not really all that... I've played it several times and while I did enjoy it very much.. It still felt like it was missing something.

The game works on this system.

You connect to the server which places your character in the main town. You can socialize and gather your team there. Once you have your team, you and your team are disconnected from the main server and you are connected directly to your peers. While connected on your peers the main server isn't doing anything... After your quest/mission you re-sync with the main server and continue along your way. Basically the town works like the lobby in Diablo multiplayer.

The concept is great, and doing it like this allows for one server and free... However, I see it having problems with cheaters and hackers. Once you enter your instanced area the main server is not communicating with your client. This would give people the ability to dupe items, money and cheat all they want just like in Diablo...

I really like the game, but it's going to be rampant with cheaters, trainers, macros, and dupers...

What most of you are forgetting is that the version you played was an Alpha stage lol. I'd say 30% completed at most. At this point, I've been gaming for over 13 years and this is the best online game I've probably every played.. topping CS by far.

Alpha or not... the way the game connects and disconnects from the main server will be the same. Cheaters and trainers will ruin the game eventually.

I played the E3 for everyone event (it even opened like a day early).

I had a BLAST.

i'll defiently be pre-ordering it to make sure i get in the even things before the game goes live.

This is one of the few online rpg's that while playing it, it actually felt fun and felt like an adventure to me, as opposed to most mmorpgs where after a bit it's just so damn boring and grind grind grind grind.

For those that don't know, it's more of a online rpg with a mmorpg "hub" for the towns.

The missions you do are in smaller groups of people, each mission is an instanced zone (only you and your group).

Think of it as like D2, the "chat" room is the towns, where they can hold a lot of people , etc. But the missions and things are in "groups".

Also what this does, is allows the game to be more well "scripted" for that specific mission.

Like for example in the E3 event, the first mission had you going to the frontlines of this battlefield, at the end of the mission a group of enemies is amassing and coming toward you, you have to get the info back to the gates of the city where the mission started, literally you have to run run run or you'll get killed by the army that's chasing you.

It just makes the missions feel more "personel" and cinematic.

Also, besides the missions and things, there are "arena's" where people can team up and do PVP. It was a blast aswell, The game will have tournaments and rewards for good teams and things aswell.

This is one of the few online rpg's that has gave me that much fun playing it since the days of UO.

Well put. This game truely has new different feel to it.. both NCSoft and Arena-Net have really stumbled across something here. I'm picking up my pre-order on monday :)

Its very nice to see something done completely different.. adding some spice to the industry.

i don't really see the point in pre-ordering it on monday since it isn't coming out for another 5 months.. i'll wait to see if anyone (like ebgames) offers any bonuses. but either way i'll be buying this game without a doubt. i hope it kills all other MMO's that charge a monthly fee.

hey hey ruffz!

I know that Gamestop and EB are both offering a bonus, which is ... special weapons you get ingame depending where you buy. If you pre order through Gamestop your get a sword ingame called the War Pick. Only gamestop ONLINE PRE ORDERS get this item. If you order through EB Games you get a secret Bow ingame for ONLINE PRE ORDERS only.

Win 1 for pre orders :) hehe.

Yea - just got off the phone with EB, I can confirm what theNoid said, allthough the woman I spoke to did say her in store date Feb. 2005.

I thought it was a bit closer - but I will definitly give this a try too.

First open beta {since E3} is Oct29th - Oct 31st.

Also, note for 56ker's worried about the "streaming" aspect.

I played it on my crappy 31.2k connection just fine, the netcode is EXTREMELY well done (even in the cities i didn't lag a bit).

The way streaming works for most things, for the missions and things it'll stream the main parts you need before you enter the mission, then after you've got that it won't stream anything else unless somethin changes for that mission, etc.

Yes, sometimes it sucked having to "wait" before a mission for people d/ling stuff, but it wasn't really really long and it worked very well for low connection people.

I even had fun playing in the "single player" portions of the world, exploring it by myself and finding chests and keys to them, etc. There were bosses and other things aswell which made it interesting to play that part of the game. (it's not an offline mode, but like a "zone" where it's simply just your own instanced zone for you to play by yourself).

Someone mentioned that groups are limited to only 4 people - is this correct? Why do you guys think this is? Do 4 man groups feel balanced? I am curious as most mm0rpgs seem to be in the 6-8 man group phase now a days.

In the E3 event the "bigger" missions could hold more players.

But with the first mission with 4 people it was fine and very well done.

Having a nice Melee guy, an archer, then magic user was nice.

I played the E3 event, thought it was an monthly fee MMORPG (didnt pay attention just DLed it) and uninstalled it like 2 hours later. Now that I know what its trying to be as a game I think its gunna be cool as hell, the PvP seems like its gunna be really well balanced and have alot of replayability..

Thx for the feedback! I of course got my free Demo CD for the first beta - but didnt toss it into the cd tray until the day after the event ended. 'doh

LOL ouch. The next beta weekend event is the last weekend in Oct. This one will be open to the public. But all the next weekend beta events will be for pre orders only until release.

Ah gotcha - I never went for those pre-order things, but maybe this will be my first. I really am excited about this game.

The points I liked about DiabloI/II was that you could jump on nearly anytime and play what you wanted - if you had 5 minutes before work - boom. 2 hours before wife home - boom. 12 hours before Monday - boom.

This game looks similar in mechanics.

I don't know where you got this idea from, but it is totally not true. The game is 100% run on ArenaNet's servers (multiple servers, but they are seamlessly integrated). In point of fact, the game cannot be run while disconnected from the server at all. The reason why not? Because your client does not have the files required to actually power the game. The client that sits on your system is mostly art assets. The key game code resides on ArenaNet's servers and is never present on your system. For your client to do something it must be told to do so by the server.

Just to make it 100% clear ... you cannot play the game client-client. It is 100% client-server, and even more importantly the game is actually run by the server and not by your client. What [H]|M Dazz has said is completely and utterly false.

Will there be problems with hackers and cheats etc? Quite probably. Will they be game-ending problems? No way. The streaming tech that is built into the game means that if the devs learn about a hack/cheat/exploit they can close it within hours. Minutes even. I've seen this tech in action over the last year alpha testing the game, and it is literally amazing to see. You can log a bug report and come back to re-test an hour later and it's been fixed.

The devs have also thought a little outside the box when it comes to cheat prevention. We all know of the famous Maphack that plagues games like StarCraft and WarCraft. So what's ArenaNet's solution? No fog on the minimap. Instead of fighting trying to prevent Maphacks (practically impossible to prevent because location data must be sent to the client), they've simply made it into a non-issue.

I am extemely excited about this game, and just picked up my pre order last night at EB. What will probably happen is this... the game will launch, all the followers who know how amazing this game is setup will join.

Time will pass, the word will spread and I wouldn't be suprised if GW becomes the CS to the online rpg/mmog community. It really appears the layout is that good. Arenanet has really setup some awesome ideas, and I can't wait for the world preview event!

I was in beta. I loved the game. However, I don't like the "expansion every 6 - 8 months." Beta had very little to do beyond the multiple person missions. I don't see this game having a lot of stuff to do in terms of questing. Still, I will get it because of the lack of a monthly fee.

This game is def not MMO. It's MMO in two aspecs or should I say areas? 1) In town. 2) In missions.

The latter does not really apply since you only see the MMO part in the form of people in your party...which is limited to a few people from what I remember. So, basically it's about as massive as a town can get. You don't interact with other players outside of town or outside of missions. It's more or less single player until you hit the missions.

Hey they have a program going where if you make a guild 12-18members. And have active members and a webpage etc. You can get into a Guild Alpha program where they give everyone in your guild alpha accounts and you get to play on Wed and Friday nights from like 9-12 or so.

However as part of the deal you have to have at least 8 members from your guild at every session.

What do you guys think about this?

IF we had interest we could get a webpage going and such and then submit an application (there are a few sites accepting applications)

No, you were not in beta. The beta has not started yet. What you played during E3 was a limited alpha version of the game. Very limited. Maybe 5-10% of the final game content was available during the E3 event. A lot has changed since then ... for example, the skill gem system has been replaced.

In the last two weeks alone there have been no less than 45 new skills added to the game. A new world map. Complete overhaul of the items system (non-Warriors can now use shields, a change that occured only in the last 24 hours). New missions. New monsters. I could go on. Edit: I should add that during E3 you had 5 major missions available to play. There are now 23, plus a lot of free-roam Hunting Grounds (how many I'm not sure, but at least 50 at the time of writing) that will include additional quests.

The beta starts October 29th with the World Preview Event that lasts through until the 31st October. Content during the WPE will again be limited. The current alpha test team will be continuing to take part in the closed beta. During the next couple of months ArenaNet will be inviting several guilds; currently we know for sure that 12 new guilds, each able to invite 12 members, will join the closed testing before Oct 29th. Those who pre-order the game (in the USA/Canada) will be given access to the beta events on the first weekend of each month. I do not know how much content those people will have access to.

((Those outside of the USA/Canada will be able to gain access to beta events through other means, such as via magazine offers.))

I am planning on pre-ordering Guild Wars as soon as it arrives at a local EBgames here in Canada.

I might try on monday, there is plenty of time to "the first weekend of the month" which I'm hoping starts in October 2nd, but I'm not getting my hopes up (probably will be after the worldwide event on haloween)

It is a "fun" and refreshing MMO game, which I haven't felt since EQ, UO or UT. The limited alpha at E3 had me thinking that this is what Diablo2 should have been. I've always enjoyed competition, group PVP is always a blast.

What are those hunting grounds used for primarily? Pretty much a place to gain XP and maybe find some good items?

I'm excited for EQ2 and for Guild Wars. I loved EQ and Diablo 2 (and GW looks pretty similar to D2 in concept). However, only time can tell, I didn't think the E3 version was that great, but then again it was just an Alpha, so I can wait for the final version.

At the current time, yes. During E34E there were some basic quests available. I'm speculating here, however I believe the Hunting Ground areas will eventually be filled with all sorts of things to do. Secret areas to go to learn rare skills, lots of mini-quests, cut-price traders and crafter NPC's, that sort of thing.

You can travel across the world via the Hunting Grounds. I can't show you the world map due to NDA, but it's gorgeous. Each Hunting Ground is an area on the map and they are all interconnected. So while it is easy to move around the world via the instant teleport system, you don't have to do that if you don't want to. You can walk from Ascalon across the Shiverpeaks and into Kryta if you want to. Along the way you will find the outposts for the missions and be able to do those as well.

What I didn't like about the Beta was when you would PvP teams, my team always managed to get fucked in the ass by an aircraft carrier. Unless they find a way to balance the team based PvP, like making you play against an equally skilled group of players, then I'll pass. If they have tons of levels that are just team based quests and not dominated by PvP, then I'll be a little more interested.

Anyone know if you can preorder anywhere else online besides gamespot and ebgames so far?

Bestbuy.com

Also, you guys might want to check out the guildwars site, the pre orders get a special in game bounus and they have pics/info up on the items.

i'm gonna pre order it from best buy, cause you get a shield from it.

I thought GW was a blast and can't wait to get into it again from what I hear the game will be all new from the E3 event. I played a ranger/monk, hard to learn yet a great combo and 4 times I won the mission for my team as the last man standing just by running like hell as it only takes one person to report back for a successful mission. In fact we ought to go for our own guild during the Oct 29th open beta, soon as I sign up, I'll post my name and skill in a new thread. Yes more Guild Wars!

*sigh* It wasn't beta ... it was alpha. Lots of new skills have been added since, and a LOT of balance changes have been made.

For release, PvP will include a system that will match teams/guilds against other teams/guilds of roughly equal skill.

At the current time (I posted this earlier in the thread) there are 23 story-related missions (team size varies from max of 4 to max of 8), and well over 50 Hunting Ground zones that are available for solo and team play.

amazing game! i'm a cs veteran pretty much on a hiatus from gaming. nothing seems to get me excited anymore, even doom3 and half-life2 around the corner. this game, however, had me hooked from the minute i sat down during the e3 event.

I for one HATE mmorpgs due to the endless repetitive nature, and would rather play a good CS scrim any day. but this game brings the action and rpg genres together in a game that has the best gameplay of any rpg (where you're actually involved in the fighting, not just point and click) with no monthly fee and an unprecedented streaming interface that allows for seamless changes/expansions and quick responses to cheating/trainers. screw EQ2 and WoW! They are rehashes of the same old concepts. This game requires actual skill and teamplay, allows for true individuality and guild customization, and the entire world is connected; no more multiple, disconnected servers. Using an engine that supports up to 16, possibly even 32 on a single team, with gorgeous graphics, you can't go wrong. you only need to worry that they can create missions fast enough for your 24 hour a day gaming sessions. in any case, just buy it, you won't be disappointed
