I have been playing videogames for 23 years, From Atari 2600, Apple IIC, and Gameboy games all the way through modern PC, Xbox/PS2, and PSP games and never before has a game upset me so much.

The problem is that Guildwars is visually as incredible as any other game out there and has a huge number of people playing it at any one time. Yet even including the time it takes to type your password it still only takes about 15 seconds to get the game fully launched into a zone with ~50 other players in it.

So WTF is wrong with almost EVERY OTHER GAME ever made that causes them to take 2 to 10 times longer to launch when they usually look worse, don't have you type a password, and aren't online at all? Are all other developers incompetent? Are these guys just that damn good? WTF is going on?

i dont have that problem i think it is your internet connection dude

Are you joking or serious? Cause if you are serious then you obviously didn't read my post, and if you are joking then you didn't make it nearly obvious enough.

I must give the Guild Wars crew credit. I can run it full quality on my FX5900. I am also told it will work over a 56K connection.

So you get a great looking, interactive game that does not take a $500 video card and a T3 line to run on.

I agree. I have never seen a game launch or exit as fast. It is pretty damn sweet.

Yeah, I totaly forgot to mention that too... Admittedly I have a pretty powerful PC and Videocard, but the game runs with maxed settings at 1600x1200x4AAx16AF with only the occasionaly dip below 85FPS (my refresh rate/max FPS)... You know, I should probably turn on TAA and really burn this thing up.

wow, with all the buzz and the no monthly fee.... well I guess I will soon say hello to my first MNOLRPG or whatever. :p Sorry, I'm a fps player, not up with the lingo. Maybe soon I'll know, rather than guess, what PvE means. ;)

Thought I might have finally found a bad word on the game, and it's that it loads so fast it pisses people off. I will now proceed to gib you all in the head!!! Err... or whatever the equivalent is.....

:D

one problem i have with guild wars - if your internet cuts out, you have to wait for it to time out, and you lose whatever mission progress and group you had. no way around it.

apparently (haven't played it, but according to my friend who does) in everquest2, if your internet cuts out, you have 30 seconds in which if it comes back up, you're still connected just fine. guild wars just says "couldn't complete that operation" and makes you log back in and start over from the beginning of the mission.

other than that (and a few minor quibbles that would piss other people off were they to be fixed) i love the game.

at first, i thought this was gonna be a "OMG guild wars is teh suxor!" post. then i read it, and realize it is a "OMG all other games are teh suxor!" post. hehe... at least they did a good job with it. no real issues at launch (connection problems friday afternoonish the week it was released) but nothing like WoW (or was it FFXI or something) had where it just didn't work or whatever for the first week or something.

i really enjoy the game... looks awesome on my 9700pro too. i may try dropping the res and upping the FSAA though.. just play with settings. see if i can make it even prettier.

I too am very impressed with how great the coding is. The game loads quickly, exits quickly, and runs amazingly well on my P4-m downclocked to 1200mhz with a 4200go at 1024x768 with medium quality. Helll when I bought this I was worried it wouldn't play at all, not only does it play just fine, but it does that at medium quality and looks stunning.

While I wish that you could run through bushes and didn't have quite so many invisible walls, I am nonetheless extremely impressed with the game, it is everything I expected and then some. I will never go back to games like SWG that take inordinate amounts of time to load (It takes my computer literally 5 minutes at best to load a world in SWG while guild wars takes seconds, not to mention guild wars looks better and never lags).

No kidding, I cannot believe how they coded this game, but its just un farking believable. Any level, even from starting the game takes less then 3 seconds to load up and BOOM im in and ready to play! I about passed out the first time the game loaded, I thought something was wrong, there was no way a game looking this good could load that fast *COUGH** HACKK * EQ2 *couugh!!*** Sony!!*

Login off? Fudge, Im used to 30 second sit and wait and wait, log offs. GW? Nope, I say "Log off" and my wish is my command, *poof* Im logged off. Period. Window mode? Right off the bat, hit the Window icon and *Poof!!!* Instant working windowed mode. No gay ass hacking or futzing around trying to get window mode to work *Cough* DAOC.

Crowded areas? Hah, my machine laughs and keeps right on playing with nary a slowdown as if nothing was happening. EQ2? Wooooo, 2fps in crowded towns if im lucky!!!!

Even fully cranked at 1280x1024 8xAF and 4xAA this game doesn't even hiccup and it looks absolutely farking incredible! Why the hell Sony and other MMORPG's developers can't pull this off is beyond me.

Keep in mind GW is NOT an MMORPG and hence cannot be compared to one, load times will obviously be higher on a true MMORPG...still though GuildWars loads faster than DiabloII on my computer

Guild Wars truely is a gaming marvel.

It compares to nothing else on the market as it merges genres like MMORPGs, FPS, and card games (like Magic: The Gathering) all into one game. People who buy this game expecting it to be something else will be disappointed. Anyone who buys this game with the intentions to see something new and exciting ... almost breathtaking, will be thoroughly pleased.

Game of the year, without a doubt. I couldn't imagine anything even coming close to what Arenanet has done.

I have to kind of agree with this. This isn't a "True" MMORPG so it really shouldn't be directly compared to them.

However, it has some strong similarities, and if this game can do everything it does so well and so quickly then you just have to wonder why other games of all genres can't do the same things.

For instance, you can install a very, very, small base client and then launch the game and you will be playing in the first area in about 15 minutes (assuming you have broadband), and then as you play it will pull down all the other files in the background without you even noticing. By the time you are ready to leave the first town it will have downloaded the next area, and this continues for the entire game. By the time you finish your first session or two it will have the entire game downloaded and except for the wait on the first area you will never have a single slowdown in level loading... Compare that to WoW (which is the worst in history in my opinion... Be faster to have them overnight a patch CD to you), or to patching 99% of the other games out there.

This is currently being worked on, and has been stated will be incorporated into the game at some point. The difficulty is, since the player dropped from an instanced map, how do you differentiate a legitimate drop from someone dropping to avoid a loss (remember the old starcraft days?), to reload a different skill set based on the opposing team, etc. The subtleties and features that make Guild Wars so unique are also what is making the fix for this so touchy an issue.

i think if it just put you straight back where you were (no opportunity to change skills) it'd be fine. it also protects your team... they're just down a person if someone drops.

I haven't played WoW, but I cant imagine a game with more coding/loading issues than Star Wars Galaxies. I clocked a planet load time as high as 15 minutes, and the game had such a huge memory leak error (this was only a few months ago, you would think something as fundamental as a memory leak would be fixed in two years). I had to do /flushGraphicsResources fullReset every hour or so to keep the game running without lagging to a standstill of .5 fps.

I believe uzor meant to say that it wasn't just that easy. If it were just a matter of adressing their concerns you wouldn't see a problem with disconnects. Chances are they're exploring the full extent of how someone could exploit disconnections. Until then, they're not giving anyone the opportunity to find out, or use any of these exploits.

Could be an issue with AI. Maybe they have trouble with dropped players not registering to AI, or even worse, being unselectable, even when they resume. Could be any number of things, and it could simply be that they haven't varified players can NOT reselect skills and rejoin an existing instance after being dropped.

AHHHH that exactly happened to me today, sucked.

Wow, I just had another great experience with guild wars and fast response times. However this time it was with the customer support. Anyways, I had put in a support question about 2 days ago. The status on the question said waiting, so I assumed that I was waiting for them to reply....turns out they had replied a mere 9 minutes after I submitted my question. I have to say, everything arena.net has done with guild wars that I have seen has been great.

I agree with this post, i would also like to point out how smooth the launch was.

I love this game :D

Also, i think part of the reason its so fast: Has anyone acttually taken a look in the GW Folder? its a single .exe and a huge .dat file. and screenshot folder :D

Heh then shouldn't steam games launch fast? All the game data for then is kept in a single rather large file :p

For the person who said they heard they could run the game on 56k, I can vouche for that. My friend who I got into Guild Wars started playing it here (where I have cable), and went home to try it out on his modem connection. He only connects somewhere in the 20k's because of where he lives, but it works great, especially when we're partied up, there's no lag whatsoever.

YO I Can't even OPEN an account. :(

Err=5. I may be experiencing internet routing issues?!!? Yah right... Gah I hate when I can't play my new game.

i bought the game last weekend, still havent installed it. i might maybe tonight or tommarow. but anyways. so there is a problem making an account?

thats not the games fault... probably firewall junk.

i must say, this game has been running amazing on my system. 1024x768, high details, and 2x AA on a pentium m laptop.

the load times still impress me. thats why its so easy to play this game for hours; you dont sit around waiting for it to load... there is no time to check the time.

^^ I've tried dropping my security down so you could connect if you were in my drive way on your lap-top probably. Still not working. Still they should be able to tell me what's up, nothing else doesn't work. If the guy who didnt install it yet would try to startup and report back then I would know I'm not chasing my own tail. That would rule. I dunno man... my simple gaming setup, everytime I chase a problem, it's an enigma I'm chasing and "they" straighten it out.

Do you have a router or firewall on your internet setup? If so, open port 6112 (the port GW uses for data), restart your router/firewall, and try again.

or allow dmz on your router, that should help. anywaz this seems a very interesting game. the last rpg type gamer i ever played was final fantasy 7, does shenmue count has a rpg?

anywaz i must say i am impressed with vidoes and screenshots of this game, it looks very good and i will get this game

Not only does this game look good, but it also scales exceptionally well with older systems. My friend, who has integrated intel graphics (ahhhhhhh noooo  ) can even run it at 800x600.

At 1600x1200 with 4xaa and 8xaf, the game is smooth as butter on my rig and looks marvelous.

I hope more good titles come from Arena.Net in the future, Blizzard has to be kicking themselves for losing these guys.

There is like 1 or 2 original Blizzard employees left. I doubt "Blizzard" even realizes they lost this kind of talent.

That's one of the weird things about the game - they're not too good about expressing what the actual minimum hardware configuration for the game is.

These are the kinds of things I was hoping they would tell me thanks. I even askeed specifically for which port. Damn novel is kind of daunting. :D I dunno if it's in there.

EditL not working. But I was able to jack straight into the cable connection and get registered. Now I want to play it on my gamer and I'm still trying.

you probably don't have 6112 opened all the way through your firewall (or something... maybe the firewall on your gamer if it is SP2?)

at least now you know that it actually is something you can fix... (router or computer config)

as far as i know, 6112 is the only port that needs to be open to run guild wars, but i could be wrong... it may need another port to get stuff through. kinda doubt it (everything i've seen says 6112) but it is possible.

good luck getting it running properly...

I am quite sure Guild Wars will be my first MMORPG or whatever you like to call it ever. Finally an online MMORPG that don´t try to skin you maximum on cash.

However you say it works on 56 kb. I have 100 mbit it would kind of suck if I wouldn´t need it :D

I'll try to allow dmz, if I can figure it out. Thanks guys. I openned that port but still no luck.

Seems to be a problem with netgear routers when I google it up a bit. Got some other things to try. Suppose I'll report if I have luck to help others.

Edit2: Cha-ching... I had to log into my router and edit some crazy starcraft port service netgear routers have default.

http://www.guildwarsguru.com/forum/showpost.php?p=41891&postcount=81

ahhh.... I can play the game I bought.

So this is for NETGEAR ROUTERS.

Routers are just too much work. I only bought one for the dynamic IP uses. I open basically all my ports so I have no problems with anything. I would rather risk a haxor attack than have this problem anytime i bought a new game or a software package that needs the net.

You can expect and nice virus/spyware attack within a week. Bad, bad idea.
