Guild Wars Graphics Card

I would like to buy a graphics card to play guild wars and warcraft frozen throne. Maybe some new stuff too. At the very least, I would need 64 mb of video ram.

The problem with playing new stuff is my computer sucks. It's an emachines T3025, and was never reformatted. I could get someone in town to reformat and install the graphics card, but he'd charge 80 bucks. And upgrading to a brand new PC is out of the question, it wasn't even 3 years ago i got it.

And last time I ordered a graphics card, I had to send it back. Long story short, getting an expensive graphics card would be a bit risky.

Your best bet would be to keep checking this thread for availablilty for the X1950 Pro. (It is up at Best Buy though the prices should soon be lower elsewhere)

Otherwise, you should try and pickup a X850 Pro or a 7600GS.

Oh, and for goodness sakes, get some more RAM in that machine. At least another 512MB stick.

Wouldn't a 3000+ be bottlenecked by an X1950?
 
I think it would. I would recommend getting something along the lines of a 6800gs/7600gs/6800gt/7600gt/x800 series/6600gt. For guild wars or warcraft 3 those cards should perform fine along with the rest of your system. It would be ridiculous to purchase a graphics card that is worth more than entire rest of the system and would bottleneck the athlonxp.

Quite possibly, but usually turning up eye-candy (AA & AF) doesn't task your CPU more. Also, if he's not planning on PC upgrading in the near future, he'll want a card that can handle future games with ease.

But it mostly depends on his budget. If $250 is what he wants to spend, I stand by the X1950Pro recommendation. If less, than the 7600GS or the X850Pro should do splendidly.
 
What was that site that had a bar graph rating graphics cards called?

From Newegg it looks like x850pro is the best. It got a bunch of reviews, and a lot of them were good. It was $140 dollars.

Are there any other stores besides newegg? When I ordered my Chaintech from them, it wouldn't start up.

Looks like I'll get the x850 pro from newegg.

I'm looking for a memory stick too, but when I search for one in Newegg or Froogle, it shows those things you put in the digital camera, or attach to the USB. I'm looking for the kind that speeds up the computer. What would they be called (search terms). What would be a good deal?

I'd suggest going with a Geforce 7xxx series (probably the 7600gs/gt) or the ATI Radeon x1xxx series (X1600pro) as they both support SM 3.0. Some games these days do not support the use of older shader models, such as Splinter Cell Double Agent (but the game is poorly coded). The Radeon x850, although a pretty powerful card, does not work on SC: DA.

Doesn't work? Ummm that has to be incorrect. The X850Pro will work, but it will not run the game in SM 3.0, but that isn't necessarily his loss. A X1600 or 7600GS will not run any game better than a X850Pro. Supporting SM 3.0 doesn't mean that the card can run SM3.0 faster than a X850Pro can run SM2.0.

But I guess you are saying SC:DA won't run SM2.0? That would be a huge mistake on their part.

Splinter Cell Double Agent will NOT run on a card without SM 3.0. He's entirely correct.

Kind of stupid considering the game is also on original Xbox in all its SM 1.0 glory, LOL... but that's just the way it goes for the PC gamers who pick up the game.

What a horrible move on their part. Doesn't run on SM2.0 cards... That is like shooting your game in the foot for half the gaming community, the veeery slooow upgrading half. Their loss.
