The crew at The SSD Review has published a guide to speeding up your PC's boot time. If booting a powered off system to desktop in under ten seconds sounds like something you are interested in, you'll definitely want to read this.

As you know, many people buy SSDs to not only speed up their computing experience, but also speed up the boot time of their machines. SSDs will sometimes cut minutes off boot times when compared to hard drives, however, more often than not, many people do not know how to properly configure, or even know that it is possible to configure their system in such a way to speed up their boot time even more.

As someone who went from SSD to a 5year old 2.5hdd in his laptop, all I can say is never make the switch unless you absolutely have to. Not sure how I lived with spinning drives for my OS all that time.
 
Rebooting is a rare occurrence... why does this matter to people? Laptop users maybe?
 
The only issue I have with the article is they recommend leaving hibernation on. That may be fine with larger SSDs and PCs that stay on all day, but if your laptop is rocking a 128GB SSD, do you want a 16GB hibernation file being written to the drive every time you suspend? Not only does it take up a relatively large chunk of your space, you are eating into the lifetime of the drive.
 
Boot up times? I have Win 8.1 with an M500 SSD drive, I just set the PC to sleep mode, the next day i press a button and it's almost instant on (~2 sec), who cares about boot times if you have an SSD+modern OS?
 
Win8 +UEFI BIOS+SSD= 6 total seconds in boot time, this includes my startup programs. I didn't have to optimize shit.
 
The machine on the left runs 24/7 and the one on the right (Garage PC) goes to sleep when I am not using it.
Only reason I don't shut the garage machine down is that I like to continue where I left off and since that machine is in the garage and it gets hot in here when I have the AC off I let it go to sleep.

Step One: Remove hardware RAID card :D (initialization on that kills boot time no matter what).

Same here... SSD + 8.1's hybrid shutdown == super quick boot times. I just turn the tablet off when i'm not using it. Zero battery drain that way.

Oh jeez, quoted for truth!!I thought for a while when I first started building my home server(s) that my settings were out of wonk, then I learned that "Nope, just gotta sit on my thumbs for 45 seconds" haha
 
My box used to run 24/7 now it sleeps. Instant wake up with SSD. Not sure why boot time is even relevant anymore unless boot drive is either mechanical or it's a workstation box with RAID controllers and such which initialize at boot and take forever. This article is a good 5 years late, would have made sense before SSD became mainstream.
