So I've been folding on this puppy for about 2 months now.. No real issues.. Temps hit about 88C on average when folding.. sitting in my HAF932.. except I wake up to a new issue (I'm sure some of you saw I woke up to a dead mobo this weekend..)

Video cards fan cycling MEGA fast.. every 4-5 seconds it would cycle the whole way up (holy crap it gets loud..).. So I check temps.. it's sitting at 104-105..

The card normally idles around 47-48C when not in use...

Any idea what would be causing this to happen... obviously the fan isn't dead..I'm at a loss..
 
mine did this....when my wife thought she would turn the fan speed down as i had left msi afterburner up. she said she thought it was loud so she would just turn the fan speed down. she did. all the way down to 10% while folding. The fan would kick to 100% just enough to get it a few degrees cooler then would go back down to 10%. Once it hit 105 again in about 2-3 seconds it is at 100% again.
 
Same thing is happening to me.. but I don't understand why this is happening... my fan is usually running enough to keep it constant at 88c.. :( Now it lets it hit 105 when folding then cools enough to hit 104..which is a whole 1 second worth. and then it cycles down and back up ..

EDIT:

Monitoring GPUZ I now see that the fan speed NEVER changes above 40%... wtf? It's one thing after another lately...


It really seems like folding is just destroying hardware for me...

I'll check to see what temp my 470 is at. Mine is OC and I have my stock fan running at 100% and I know MSI has never hit triple digit temp before. It is loud tho... just means I have to turn my computer speakers up even louder. :p

I downloaded nvidias system tools 6.05.. which added the performance options for fan control and gpu control to the nvidia panel..

Manually setting my fan to its previous speed 40%.. seems to solve the issue.... although GPUZ is reading the fan speed at 2340rpm (saying its 59%)... at this point I dont care.. my temps are at 88C under load..

Just a heads up to anyone.. somehow it got ..I will say confused... this should never happen.. I will fiddle with it more and post updates as I go along in case anyone else runs into this issue

Update: so automatic fan control is completely useless... it stopped working and now resetting it doesn't do anything but drop the fan speed to 14%.... what the hell?

I really think it would be absurd to have to change fan speeds every time I want to fold or play a video game... I am on the cusp of just RMA'ing the card. I am tired of shit not working

I had the same problem on my GTS 250 a few months back - not sure how but a driver reinstallation or deletion of system tools cured it for me, the damage was done though as since that day my 250 hasn't been right - occasional artifacts and the fan was grinding - at the weekend it just gave up all together and i've had to replace the fan.

Try the driver reinstall but i would also be tempted to see if anything has got itself wrapped around the fan. Nvidia's control panel was useless for me as it wouldn't let me take the fan above 38% until i reinstalled. I eventually ditched system tools as well and use a combination of nvidia's control panel and GPU-z. System tools is a resource hog that should not be allowed anywhere near a folding boxen
