GTX460 Woes

Hi everyone,

I'm building a new system. Having trouble deciding on a video card. I want it to be quiet and allow me to play on high-very high settings. I was almost set on the MSI GTX460 Cyclone 1GB until I read about many freezing problems related to this card. People say this is one of the quietest cards available. Does anybody know if these freezing problems have been fixed?

This computer will be used mainly for Photoshop CS5 and Lightroom 3 + casual gaming.

New setup:
Intel I5-2500k
MSI P67A mobo
Corsair XMS 3 8Gb 1333
Samsung Spinpoint F3 500Gb
Samsung Spinpoint MP4 250gb (scratch drive)
XFX black edition 750B-CAG9 750W psu
Zalman MS1000-HS1 case
Cooler master hyper 212 CPU Heatsink/fan

Sounds like the VRM's get hot on the card and causes it to lock up possibly. The heatsink on the Cyclone model doesn't do much to cool those VRM's.

Many times simply applying heatsinks to certain components solves the problem.

I have the Talon Attack model and run the snot out of it overclocking and all and have no problems so far.

no VRM heatsinks on my Hawks and they function just fine (overvolted and overclocked, even). OP- i can't comment on the Cyclone freezing problem as i've never heard of this issue, but i can say that my MSI 460 Hawks are pretty quiet and run very cool.
 
well all i can say is it would seem that a few people have had issues but they have sold a ton of these cards and so far i havent yet run into anyone here with issues.

you have to consider the audience too. People here more often than not know how to build a system correctly and have little to no issues. But you can have a lot of noobs on the Nvidia forums. Not saying they aren't legit complaints....just consider the audience

Try googling name of any cards followed by "problem" and BEHOLD.
Besides Cyclone is not THAT silent.

As for VRM's I think only GIGA has sinks over them, and I hardly doubt these are more effective then having a good air flow over them.

You don't think it's very quiet?
 
Depends on what you consider quiet. And yes, i don't think its more quiet then any other 460's with good coolers. I'd say they are all pretty even, because I've seen every1 claiming this 1st spot.

I think maybe DirectCu is tehe best.
