GTX280 -> HD6950

My system currently consists of a Q6600 OC'd to 3.2GHZ, 4GB DDR2-800 memory, and a GTX280. I typically game at 1920x1200.

If I upgrade ONLY my video card from a GTX280 -> HD6950, should I get a significant bump in performance or will I start finding myself CPU bound? My main goal is to improve my minimum framerates - I don't necessarily have to be gaming at 200fps ... but I dislike framerate dips below 30-40fps.
 
i have Q9550@3.9ghz, gtx 285 and i game at 1920x1080 and it seems to be getting long in the tooth.

from looking around I think you will notice an increase with the 6950 and you have the option of flashing it to 6970.

but how satisified you will be, thats the money question and im not sure.

can you get more juice from your Q6600?
I think I'm still good on CPU and GPU wise if i play dx9 and set medium visual settings i';m still pretty good.

in the end I dont think you can go wrong with getting the 6950.
 
I don't think I have much more OC headroom - I went about as high as I could go with air cooling. And yes, that 6950->6970 bios flash option is enticing as well. Might be worth a try.
 
The main cause of the performance difference between the 6950 and the 6970 is the clock speeds. Clock a 6950 to the same as a 6970 and there's piss all between them. So even if you end up being one of the very few who can't unlock, there's a lot of headroom with a 6950 on the stock cooler, even if it is a little loud.
 
Get the 6950 now, start saving for a new mobo/cpu when SB-E or IB comes out.
 
The question is are your 280 not cutting it anymore in games? do you experience low frame rates? If not then you got your answer.
