GTX280 AoC performance?

I have dual 8800 ultras and this game doesn't even run all that great for me. would a GTX280 run AoC better? Or perhaps 2? I assume it would but I am not really good with video cards and hardware.
 
AoC seems to hate SLI. Disable one of your ultras and your performance will go up. You wont have as high of a max frame rate, but it'll get rid of the lockups and stuttering.
 
I was basing my video card purchase on this game (this game is the reason I am building a new rig afterall). It does seem like microstuttering is an issue in this game and that it hates xfire/sli.

Personally, I am going with the 280 I think, since it seems to be the best single GPU solution. It seems like even if you SLI'd them, the issue would still exist in this game (don't quote me on it, I'm still waiting for a definite answer). Do you have a step up available?
 
I do not.. I bought these back in September so I am kind of stuck. I assume the stuttering issues and stuff is game related? I wonder if they can fix this stuff up in a future patch. Or maybe the nvidia drivers haven't really been tweaked for this game. I do remember that the most recent drivers were out before AoC hit the shelves or right around there.
 
I am running age of conan, every setting maxed (incl bloom) with 4x aa and 16x ani at 1680x1050, outside of town i get 40+ (up to a 100 at some places) and in city the lowest i have hit is 20fps. It looks damn nice haha. I was running SLI before and had tons of stuttering and a crappy framerate, they were older cards (7800 GTX 512), but i was also running less than medium settings.
 
Haven't tried AoC with my 280 yet, but I think you should just go for, it. Sli is a pain in the backside, you won't regret it. Especially in AoC.
 
I guess I can't really complain all that much since I am running 1920x1200 with 4xAA and full AF and get 30+ everywhere and occassionally a little lower in cities but it always jumps up. I am going to try to disable SLI and see how it runs.

I assume the 280 won't give me that huge of an improvement over one 8800 Ultra in 1920x1200.

So much smoother! I'm really happy with the performance. Unfortunately my GTX 280 is also getting too hot (got up to 104C within 5 minutes of AOC) and the Nvidia drivers treat my LG L246W monitor as a TV (screen shifted to left and stretched up off the top) so I had to use a modified INF file to get it to recognize it as a monitor. So my feelings are mixed about this $650 purchase right now (leaning towards unhappy if I have to RMA because of the heat issue).
 
Wow 104C is high... at least i guess i wont need to turn up the house's heat this winter. Just turn on the PC with the sidepanel open and voila.
 
Is there anyone who will be comparing the GTX 280 to the HD4870 when it comes out in this game? (so I know what I should buy :p)
 
magnuspah, no kidding. :) I'm tempted to make some form of instant water heater using a GTX 280. It's insane how hot this thing gets and anything that comes in contact with it (ie: the case area around the back). And this week's insane So. CA temperatures don't help when the room temp is 90F, AC IS on and you're trying to play AoC the first night you install the card. I don't know how hot the GPU temp was but I know I was seeing some polygon artifacts that first night. This is with the eVGA SC model. Last night I stepped the clocks down to normal GTX 280 rates and AoC was stellar. But dayam does this sucker get hot.
 
I'm running AoC fine. All high 1680x 4xAA|16xAF shadows and bloom enabled. With other cards, including my 8800GTX, I had to kill shadows to keep it smooth.
 
With the 8800GT I have everything max at 1680x1050. 90% of the time it's ~25(which I find quite playable for this game). There is the the occasional spike down but this does not take away from the gameplay. Also in instances I saw it get to 123 once but it usually hangs around 35-50 depending on the instance.
