gtx260 too hot?

this just happened all of the sudden as im posting this, my rig has been running for a few hours now.

i was just browsing the internet and my aero theme in windows 7 reverted to basic, the graphics card immediately came to mind so i went to check the temps on the gpu (bfg gtx260)

and to my surprise i noticed it was hovering in the mid 50's and it was still getting hotter, weird because im not doing anything graphic intensive (i dont even plays games on this pc).

so in order to cool it off i went into the nvidia control panel and i turned the fan speed up to 75%, and the gpu eventually cooled off to 41c which brought back the aero effect in windows.

why is the gpu running so hot if im not even utilizing it?

my ambient temps cant be too high either, the cpu is idling at 38c...
 
The color scheme thing could be glitchy, dont rely on just that being the deciding factor that your GPU is running to hot. I mean hell, it randomly happens to my system and look what Im running lol.
 
my temps were abnormally high though... and when the temps lowered the scheme did come back
 
50's are about right for stock fan speeds at stock clocks.. mine idles around 51-52C at 40% fan(stock speed) on stock clocks.. but i usually run my card at 600/1350/1161 with the fan at 65% which is roughly 40-42C idle..

my gpu usually idles at 42 once I restarted the pc I lowered the fan down to 40% and it was still in the 40s.

so I guess whatever was heating the gpu up went away...

if you had your browser open on a web page running flash player then it could of been using your gpu due to the hardware accel support..
 
some programs and such causes windows 7 to revert back to basic. i had it happen to me a couple times. you temps are fine. i had a 4870 that idled at 58-60C for 2 years and it was fine.
