GTX260 PPD

The GTX260 gets about 5,600PPD & the GTX280 gets about 6,500PPD. What is bothering me about both of them is the fact that a 8800GTS 512MB gets around 4,900PPD, and yet it has 128 Stream Processors. The GTX260 has 192 which is a 50% increase, which should mean it gets around 7,350PPD, and the GTX280 has 240 which is a 87.5% increase, which should mean it gets around 9,187PPD. So both of them aren't fully being utilized yet for some reason.

This might be similar to what is happening to the ATI cards, just to a lesser extent.

Yes, the WU is not big enough to take advantage of that much shaders so there is a diminishing curve above a certain point. The 9800GTX is the start of that curve but when they increase the size of the proteins, it will improve a lot.

I think some people already reported in excess of 8000PPD for the GTX280. I saw it on the FCF a couple of days ago. It's still not worth the cost, but maybe when it drops a couple of hundred bucks....

Yeah, the GTX 260 should be 299$ and GTX 280 for 449$ then NVIDIA would be competitive.

where are these numbers coming from?

Those numbers make me curious about the gtx260.

Yeah, and they should be putting out a lot more PPD. Because from the research I've done, the Stream Processors in the GTX200 series are the exact same as the Stream Processors on the 8 & 9 series cards. So not only should they be cheaper, but they should be putting out a lot more PPD.

jebo_4jc, I got the original numbers of 6,500 PPD for the GTX280 & 5800 PPD for the GTX260 are from Tomshardware.com. The numbers I generated were from taking the speed of the 8800GTS 512MB PPD and multiplying the increase in Stream Processors times the number in the 8800GTS 512MB.

No offense, but I only slightly believe in Tom's numbers more than I do the Inq's stories.

I will surely buy a GTX 260 but I must wait 2 weeks because the money won't be there before that (balance payment from our house sale). When I get one, I'll post some numbers but off my head, it should produce about 7000-7500 ppd at least.

What do you guys think the chances are that the GTX2600 will drop in price over the next month? Too bad it isn't $300 instead of $400. It would be a lot "easier" to go with one then.
Somehow I think the prices aren't going to change for a long time.

They have to drop whether nVidia likes it or not. The prices have been artificially too high for years due tot a lack of competition. Now that there's strong competition on several price points, prices can only go one way.

Yeah, I hope they drop soon, so I can replace all my 8800GTS 512MB's with them.
