Was wondering, has anyone oced their gtx260, gtx280, 4850, or 4870 card and noticed a huge difference? Also ,the does extra mhz push the card past another (for example, in a contest between a heavy oc gtx260 and a 4870, which one wins?)?

afaik ATi cards run very hot loaded, maybe look for aftermarket cooler?

Well, it looks like Diamond is releasing a 4870 that can OC all the way to 950/4.8Ghz, so there is tons of potential in this chip. I'd expect Catalyst and Rivatuner will very soon allow you to clock this high. Also, the stock cooler on 4870 is sufficient, but current bios settings don't allow you to crank the fan above 50%. Since the 4850 is single slot, you're a little limited unless you get an after market cooler.

GTX 260 is 65nm and a huge die so there probably isn't that much overhead.

I've personally been able to push my factory OC'ed GTX 280 clocks up to 727/1485/2780 (compared to stock clocks of 602/1296/2215 and factory overclocks of 670/1458/2430). I do notice about a couple fps difference in Crysis framerates from the factory overclock (which itself adds a frame or two, so we're talking about 3-4 fps total over stock). This is noticeable when we're talking about Crysis at 1080p with most of the eye candy. I keep my fan at 84%, where it's still quieter than my air conditioner, and heat isn't an issue. I idle at about 50 C and have yet to reach 80 C under load.

My 4870 is at 790/4400mhz and awaiting ATI tool or Rivatuner to support these new cards. As of now you can easily modify CCC profiles to get the fan speed up to 100% if you wanted. I ran mine at 50% during this OC and stressed the GPU 100% seeing only 60C temps. Stock cooler will keep it plenty cool at a high noise level.
