Hi guys, based on your experience, will I max out the 960 if I exclusively play at 1080p only?

you will lack of enough power to max out (without even think about AA) recent gaming.. its a decent card.. but its weak.. that card is in the GTX 670 territory which its now a low end card, don't keep too much hope in that card.

This is laughably wrong.

The GTX 960 is faster than the 760 and competes in performance to the R9 285.

It is the fastest card at $199 right now. There is no other card that can compete at that price.

OP, just check out our reviews to find the real performance and limits of this video card.

That is way outside the price range of the 960, to even offer that to someone who is looking at the price range of the 960 is ridiculous.

The 960 is a hell of a card but given the recent deals on 290x, OP may want to consider if its worth the extra cash.

Personally I'm waiting for open box/remanufactured 970s. (thanks 3.5gb fiasco) hopefully they'll be under $280.

I was maxing out most games at 1080 with my GTX 670. Though I am sure some of the newest games like Far Cry 4 and some of the to be released soon games won't be able to hold 60 frame rates anymore. Personally I wouldn't want to upgrade to a GTX 960/670 performance level card in 2015. Especially with 2GB of VRAM.

If you can afford it I would recommend spending more for the GTX 970. Or look at AMD's offerings.

I'd look for a good deal on a 290x.

Would you AMD users stop farking recommending your overhyped cards in the WRONG GPU forum section? Its getting really old to see people wanting NVIDIA GPU recommendations in the NVIDIA GPU forum section and you people keep trolling and hyping your damn 290x all the time

Maybe if you looked at his sig you'd find he has 2 NVidia cards in his system. I see one troll here and guess who it is.

and you forget that the 670 are also faster than the 760?.. and that's the territory of the gtx 960.. being still weaker than the 770 or 280X  I don't really know what is this fetish that [H] its having with the GTX 960.. and the exciting saying its stronger than the R9 285 which actually its also weaker than the 770 and 280X.. what's the point of buy a new GPU and start to reduce image quality settings from day one?.... in the past GTX x60 series were the start point for many gamers, but those cards were able to last a lot of time, were stronger cards in comparison to this launch of the GTX 960.. still are people out there using GTX 460, 560 and 660 cards, the 660 was at 230$ at launch, even if the gtx 660TI was at 300$ at launch, that card was able to compete with stronger AMD cards at the moment and proved to be a very strong card for the price.. the gtx 960 its a 200$ limited card since launch date, so whats the point of a 2GB card right now?... they could have easily launch that card as a GTX 950 for 200$ and launch a stronger card with couple of more shaders, TMUs, ROPS, 192bit 3GB 960 at 250-265$.. and would have been way better..

There is still too much focus on the specs, ignoring what the real-world performance actually tells us. When you realize that the real-world performance is what it is, it doesn't look so bad for a $199 card, in fact it looks quite good for that price point. It is matching the performance of AMD's R9 285 which launched (by MSRP) at $50 more just this past September. Same performance, yet $50 cheaper MSRP. Sounds like competition to me.

Not trying to be rude, but as Arct1c0n said...

Please.

To answer the OP's question, if you don't mind 30fps with infrequent drops in the 20's in the most memory hungry titles (as I do not at all, unlike many around here I find 30fps perfectly playable in everything but fighting games) the 960 will be up to the challenge maxing most everything out at 1920x1080 as long as you don't go nuts with AA/AF.

Thank you Brent. At least someone in this thread is making sense. Too much focus on specs and not on actual gameplay.

Thank you Brent. Its about time someone with a little clout and testing knowledge contests these claims that the card is a complete failure (which are rampant all over - particularly AMD-centric Anandtech forums).

I would have hoped that in two generations the $200 card would outpace the $380-400 card (670) by a decent margin.

At 200 the GTX960 is not the best buy, but for 30 to 50 more you have tons of other options that would last you far longer.
Also the 285 was not really hailed as any sort of great card, so why does matching a 285 mean that much?

I would avoid both those cards, and at the prices available now its very easy to do so. I mean another 30 to 50 is not much at all. Wait two weeks and reap the benefits of enjoying modern titles for a couple years longer than the GTX960 or R285.

The price difference for better hardware is not as big as some would have you believe.
The 280x can be found for cheaper than the GTX960 on certain occasions and most of the time its a mere 10 dollar difference. The R290 can be had for a mere 40 dollars more, and these are not the only cards that make the GTX960 meaningless either. GTX680s would be better than the GTX960 and at prices that wont hurt the wallet badly either.

A 670 is slower than the 960 and the 680 is barely faster so not sure what you were thinking in that part of your comment.

hey... but.. but.. but.. the GTX 960 its faster than the R9 285  and no card in the market can compete at that price..

.
Yeah neither am I...
I needed Coffee today thats for sure.
I stand behind the 680 part of my comment though.

I've been looking at this card too, looks like great performance for the cost.

Not to threadjack or anything, but what do you think is the least expensive quad CPU you can use without bottleneck in gaming with this video card?

Hey guys, thanks a lot for your insights. I'm more inclined now to get a 970 instead, for the sake of 'future proofing'.

You can find i5 2500Ks for $140 or less routinely in the forums or eBay. I'm having a great experience with an i7 2600 and a stock clocked card. YMMV.

Isn't that the story of the 970 specs issue? :D I too am hoping that there will be some 970 deals as a result. I'd consider giving SLI another shot just for fun.

Personally, I think that based upon the reviews, the 960 is a sweet card. It has solid 1080p performance at a cheap price. The detractors are accurate in saying that you may not be able to max out some very recent games even at 1080p, but then again, there is no alternative at $200 that will let you do that. If that is your budget, I would not hesitate to get one.
