I am currently running a 670 and a 22". I can run games on High/Ultra at 1080 with no issues but I am looking to move to a 27" @1440

1. Will my 670 hold up at 1440 or should I upgrade to a newer card?
Most of the 670 reviews I have looked at seem like it will handle it but not necessarily at the FPS and High/Ultra that I am used to.

2. Which monitors should I be looking at?
Primary use is gaming(MMOs, RPGs, FPS, RTS, anything really). I see a lot of 27" "Gaming" monitors coming out(Acer) or already out(Asus Rog) but these have a steep price tag. I would like to stay around $500 but wouldn't rule out one of the 700-800 ones if that is the best way to go for Performance/Image Quality. I do some Adobe Lightroom & Photoshop work but this is a small percentage.

I used to have a GTX680 and it held up okay at 2560x1440 on my catleap and qnix. But I do remember games like crysis 3 at max settings, it got choppy.

SInce GTX680 > GTX670, I'll say it will hold up for pretty much every game there is, but you'll have to turn some eye candy settings down.

Not really no, at high ultra settings and 60fps you need an OC GTX 980 or 980ti.

My OC 970 is good for 1080p but not good enough for 1440p in newer games.

My oveclocked 980 is incapable of pushing Witcher 3 at 60fps reliably at 1440, so your 970 is gonna do even worse. A 1080p monitor pretty much is max what a 970 will run with higher settings and near the 60fps range

Yeh thats what I just said... I have the witcher and it runs ok with no hairworks, an OC 970 is pretty much fine for 1080p, Few games on my 970 I would like to run better at 1080p but most are alright. I will prob get a 980ti or a fury card for 1440p monitor. But yes basically a 670 is seriously not good enough at all for 1440p and barely good enough for 1080p with new games.

1080p = 970 / 980 / 290x

1440p = 980ti / titan x / fury x

Anything less is not good enough for new games at high settings / 60fps.

I have a 670 and I run good enough at 1440p on High settings for all my games.

I think the most demanding game I play is BF4 which runs nicely at 1440p on high.

I dont have an fps counter that I watch, but it never gets stuttery or laggy that I can notice, so that's good enough for me

I see a 980 or one of the new team red cards in the future.
How about monitor suggestions? If I went team red the new asus or BenQ monitors seem nice for freesync.

I think if you listen to the people saying the 670 is fast enough for 1440p you will be disappointed.... unless you only play old games or don't mind medium graphics or 30fps... If you want 60fps and high graphics on new games you need an OC 980 minimum.

Yes.

Best 27" 2560x1440 Monitors. No point in spending >550$ on a 1440p monitor unless you buy a better gpu.

Thanks for the link I stumbled across your review of the PB278QR on there a few minutes ago and I am liking it a lot. As for the new GPU....Father's Day is coming up and the kids are about to get told what to get daddy :)

Thoughts on the upcoming Asus PG279Q - Date/Price?

1. I'd recommend a 980 Ti as I'm using just one for now and it can max out many games at 90+ fps with a few exceptions of course like the Witcher 3 which needs hairworks turned off and AO set to SSAO. One 980 Ti will last you a while at 1440p given you're willing to dial back a little bit of settings.

2. The Acer XB270HU is out now and most of the QC issues seem to be fixed. I probably just got very lucky with mine as I have no issues and bought it on day 1. This monitor has nearly everything one could ask for in a 1440p monitor (144Hz refresh rate, IPS Panel, G Sync) If the price tag for gsync is too steep then an alternative would be the Freesync Asus MG278Q/MG279Q paired with a single Radeon Fury X card.
