GTX 580s With Backplates

None of EVGA's cards include a backplate (sans water-cooled 580)

Their business model has pretty much gone in the direction of "why give something away when you can get $20 for it"... same goes for the hi-flow backplate, another $10...Just bling for your fancy new GPU that might decrease temps 3-5 degrees.

I have an SC version and it doesn't come with a backplate. You need to buy the backplate from EVGA. Also, the backplate for the GTX580 has plenty of holes. I decided to pass on this one as it didn't seem like it made much of a difference this time. I had one for the GTX295 btw.

Correct, not really sure why anyone would need them for an air cooled 580, my three are all nicely stacked together with no heat or noise issues.

My watercool gpu-x3 "hammer" waterblocks arrived, just waiting on my 2 GTX580's to arrive for some surround monitor action!

To prevent cards from warping.

EK's mirror-finish nickel backplates look amazing. Easily worth the money. Unless you're also buying their waterblocks, though, you have no obvious way to attach them.

Some of the ASUS HD 5870 E6 models have a backplate.

It appears that all of the release model AMD 6970s have a solid backplate.

Unfortunately, no one on the nvidia side has included a backplate on the 580 GTX which is poor form for the price of the card. Only evga offers one, but it will fit on any release model 580.
I got a backplate from them for my MSI GTX 580.
