Well that didn't take too long...

The German site Hardware-Infos has published a table which supposedly includes the specifications of a forthcoming card, the GTX485.

This card is very similar to the already released GTX480, but it has the full complement of shaders that the Fermi is endowed with, and which it was initially demonstrated as having, namely 512. nVidia has also increased the number of TMUs from 60 to 64. The chip on which the card is based remains the GF100, which is to be clocked at 720MHz (20MHz higher than the GTX480). The shaders are to be clocked at 1440MHz, though this particular specification is not definite.

The date these cards are to be released is unknown, but it is expected that they will command a price premium of only $20 over the GTX480.

With the kind of heat that the 480's are putting out, is this going to be a good idea? Having that kind of heat inside of a computer case couldn't be healthy for everything else. I am curious though at what the specs such as temperature, noise, and performance will be.......
 
By the end of the year, I'll be ready to sell my GTX285's and then move up to the 485's. I'm ok with the heat as I can get rid of it.

I did the same thing when I got my 285's. I waited a couple of months after the 280's came out and got the 285's. Mostly due to luck as I couldn't afford the 280's when the first came out.

 
besides the temps im curious how much power this cards going to use.. since the GTX480 was gimped specifically due to the fact that the card would use more then 300w under load.. i wonder what the actual power usage is going to be..

These chips may not run much if any hotter. They are not so defective that parts of the gpu have be disable like the other batches. So they may not need need to be factory overvolted to reach decent clocks either.

Case, What Case??:p. Seriously though i use a case but, it has both sides off, all the front plastic off, all the expansion slot covers removed and no IO panel cover. It sits on its side and has 4 fans pulling heat out of it.

Just perch a large 120-140mm fan across the top of the cards sucking the air out - it works wonders for pulling down temperatures:cool:

Wouldn't you want air blowing in towards the graphics cards instead? At least with my 5850's in my gaming rig, it appears to take the hot air ahd blow it out the back vent on the video card.

I just can't think of running my folding rig on a test bench or worse running it naked.

Naked folding has a long and proud history here at the [H]. Along with it's close cousin, the pizza boxen.

the thing is none of them were defective.. they disabled the extra shaders due to the power usage.. it pushed the card over the 300w limit then they clocked the card even lower to put it under the HD5970 power usage..

They've probably been cherry-picking good performing chips ever since production started. I doubt very much that they would only charge $20 over a GTX 480 though unless they have a lot more of these chips than we expect.

I'm not sure how many good chips they had to pick from. Their yeilds have been so low. I think the price shows that they got their yeilds up and can put together good number of cards now. Problem is ATI is getting much of the high end sales. So NV needs to drop price so they can sell these power hungry things.

And don't forget that the next generation Southern Islands are due out in just a few months! Rumor has it that ATI is aiming to release them by early September, just in time for the start of the holiday shopping season. Now if Stanford would finally optimize the ATI GPU client, it would be awesome.

It depends on case design and heatsink design on your GPU's, My 250 is an asus glaciator so the fan blows heat out of the whole heasink into the case not out the back and my EVGA card has the fan on the middle so that heat comes out both ends, The fan on this is more than powerful enough to overcome the amount of cold air being pulled in by the front fans. Also bear in mind my case is on its side on the floor so its easier just to have all fans pulling hot air out from whever they can and allow them to pull cold air into the case from floor level
