And at this point I'd rather buy a replacement and sell the 480 when it gets back from RMA than be without for a week.

What are my options? 6970 @ ~$370 and 3 GB 580 @ ~$600? Or are new cards right around the conrer? What does [H] reccommend?

For a single monitor, even at 2560x1600 you don't need 3 GB. If you want a single GPU card [H] just gave the ASUS ROG MATRIX GTX580 Platinum a gold award today: http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?p=1037643680#post1037643680

I've been very happy with my 3 580s, bought them on launch day and they've worked very well with the exception of some driver issues with the 270 series and 3D which have been cleared up with the 280 series.

IDK...I read that review, and it doesn't seem like I'm getting a lot for the $150 over the 6970.

If you can handle waiting and using the RMAed 480 for a bit, I'd do that and then just sell it used.

AMD's new 28nm chips should be out presumably before Christmas. So you could either buy a 7xxx card or go for a drastically reduced 590 or 6990.

I don't know if I can sell you on low power, low heat since you bought a 480; but I'll tell you that I'm excited about 28nm!

If you just want something to hold you over I'd recommend the Sapphire HD6950 Toxic. New gen cards aren't very far off.

I read two reviews. One said that the card comes pre-unlocked (can't find that review at the moment). The other (TweakTown) said that theirs unlocked, no dramas.

Dave Baumann hinted that future cards could crossfire with current ones. (Because of crossfire with fusion chips) Might make what you buy today useful in the future?

I'm hesitant to buy any video card - especially an expensive one - when new ones are right around the corner.

However, it's not like popular games have been pushing the envelope when it comes to graphics technology. Is there anything coming down the pipe that I can't run at 2560x1600 and mostly-maxed settings with that 580?

Believe me, it hurt to get a Fermi. But Just Cause 2 was a game I was into at the time, and nVidia cards could enable effects which ATi cards could not - plus it was the fastest card at the time.

I went to your link, and then went to the source link from there, but I don't see anything about the power efficiency of the high-end parts - what are you seeing?

AMD chose the LP 28nm node for their launch 28nm parts. Means, by default... it's gonna be low power consumption on launch :D

Looks like my 480 still has life in it, the problem is with my U3011 :-(

I stuck in a 9600GSO I had lying around, and had the same problems. Artifacts too.
