lol 600 bucks.. must be on crack.. numbers so far dont show a 600 dollar value..
Also if the shaders are to be at 1250mhz as rumored it may not fold as good as we are hoping.
Are there more shaders then previous gen and does that help on the larger units?
Does the card handle more operations per clock cycle?
Sorry, but your 260's high operating frequency means nothing. Your 260 has less than half the cores of a 470. A 470 will eat your 260's asshole for breakfast.
Can't run two WU's at once on one GPU?
I'm sure they'll find a way to make the other shaders useful. After all, with ATI's shader count, and the fact that in the future we're probably just looking at more and more shader counts and NOT increasing clock speeds, they really ought to.

As long as I can top 15k I'll sell my 295 for one, might even get a pair if the price evens the sale of both 295's

Well, this is my gamer rig too, and I've got 700$ of GPU going unused (no sli / win xp) pretty much, and I bet these would do ok, my 295's are only at 1300 lol

I'd probly go 470's and OC them, heat would be lower and I know I'd get a better OC than my 295's, I can't OC them ove 50 MHz with current WU's

This doesn't look like a good year for the GPU client, at least not in the first half. Between the lambda WUs and uncertainty of the new GPU architecture, 2010 is shaping up to be a boon year for the SMP clients.its really going to come down to the reviews.. until those hit im not going to speculate on the overclocking.. the question will be though is if the PCB's have a 300w or 400w limit on them.. if its 300w's then you can kiss overclocking goodbye.. but if its 400w like the 5970 then there might be some possibility there.. but we can pretty much say if the 480 shader processors on the GTX 480 is correct.. then we know that underclocking the shaders wasnt enough to lower the power usage on the card to bring it below 300w to compete with the 5970.. so if thats the case.. then the shaders are using a shit load more power then expected which might also kill the overclocking..
SP's dont mean anything right now.. there are maybe 2 or 3 WU's that even exceed 216 SP's let alone even taking advantage of 480 SP's on the 480 which then the shader clock speeds make a much larger difference on those that do not exceed 216SP's.. its why there are still WU's out there where the 8800GT still kicks GTX2xx series cards asses because they dont exceed 112 shaders thus the shader clock on the 8800GT's out performs the GTX2xx series cards..
Was this FahMan by any chance?Yea, EVGA's insider that "" was folding Fermis "" seemed to swear by nearly 20k per card
now he put out 2 mil in one day, he obviously has access to amazing hardware
I think there were reports of a few new WUs recently that demonstrated an unusually low PPD for the 200-series. With a few of those WUs, the 8800GT actually performed very well (over 8000 PPD on some cards) and folded faster than the 200s. Mind you, this was demonstrated only a very few times and I have not seen these WUs come up again since they were introduced.show me a 8800gt or any other card kicking a gtx260 cards ass on any wu. my gtx-216 never drops below 8000 ppd. except the bigger 200 series cards
