okay so I just got my GTX 470 but ran a few tests on my 8800GT SLI first:
i7 920, 6GB RAM, Win 7

3dMark06 with no cpu OC

overall 16,635
sm 2.0 6,354
sm 3.0 8,197
cpu 4,484

WITH cpu OC to 3.8 ghz

22,696
9,293
10,135
6,623

I was a little shocked by the increase when OC my cpu! especially when I see the GTX 470 results

GTX 470 with cpu OC to 3.8

23,888
9,424
11,326
6,599

Also did some Crysis benchmarks (using their tool) Very High settings no AA

8800GT SLI 19X12 = 24 fps
8800GT SLI 25x14 = 14-17 fps (changed each loop)
GTX 470 19x12 = 28-29 fps
GTX 470 25x14 = 19 fps

I was a little disappointed by all the GTX 470 scores and have the newest drivers installed. Based on everything I have read I should be seeing a much greater improvement than this. I am guessing something to do with the drivers even though they are up to date. any help would be appreciated.

Your 3dMark06 scores just shows why 3dMark06 is not a good benchmark - it puts far too much weight on the CPU score. The default 3dMark06 settings are 1280x1024 with no AA, so of course you're CPU bound.

It's well understood that 8800GTX in SLI is about equal to a GTX 285, and 8800GT in SLI are somewhere in GTX 275 and GTX 280 territory.

Your Crysis scores look about right, from benchmarks I've seen on other sites like this. While that site tests Crysis Warhead instead of the original, the GTX 470 gives a 5FPS or so improvement over the GTX 275/285 which is about what you're seeing here.

You need to test more than Crysis to get the true measure of your new video card. Crysis still makes just about any video card setup cry. Partly because it's demanding, partly because it is poorly coded. Try Metro 2033, RE5, Dirt 2, etc. and any other games that you regularly play.

thanks guys, I have already got the GTX 470 in and am not taking it back out to do more comparisons ;) I know it was a good upgrade after playing some other games.

From what I have seen it may only offer 20-25% improvement in some games but the games just feel more fluid, it seems like the GTX 470 never dips like my old 8800GT SLI cards would, example is Crysis, my old cards might have done 24 fps but had bad dips to 14-15 fps, the GTX 470 is 28 fps and never dips below 22 fps... thats at 19x12 of course.

strange thing is when I did a benchmark test with GTA, it was showing 14 fps at 25X14, but I left the setting anyway and starting playing it, and I never see under 40 fps, I think their benchmark is messed up.

The other good thing about the switch, power savings, everyone says these are power hungry cards, but it all depends on what you are comparing it to, to the 5850 maybe it uses a little more. But compared to my old set up the power consumption is now HALF! the 8800GT cards used the same power the GTX 470 does and I had two of them running at lower performance than this card. i almost feel like I am wasting my new 850HX PSU by only using one of these cards :D

overall I think this was a great upgrade for my "new" system which I have been building for the last 7 months. I went in with the idea of my monitor, gpu, and psu being the last upgrades and it worked out perfect. Oh and the cost to upgrade ($280 for the GTX 470 - $100 hopefully for my old 8800GT SLI = $180!)

Nice system you've built yourself.
Can you comment on the responsiveness of the U2711 monitor?
IE do you notice ghosting in fast games? How is the input lag when playing shooters?

Well I have always had TN panels before this and just got my working U2711 on Monday, also have a 18 month old so I have had about 45 minutes each night to play around with it so far. BUT from the few games I have played (Dragon Age, Crysis, GTA, Tropico), I have not seen any ghosting, granted I only played Crysis for 15 minutes and the others aren't FPS. I did a lot of research on lag for the U2711 before buying and what I found was that it was within acceptable ranges, meaning most gamers like me would never see ghosting (and I don't) but they also said the very hardcore gamers might still see some if they are looking for it, But it does rank among the top IPS monitors for low input lag, better than any 30" currently out there and just behind the Dell U2410.

The 2560X1440 and amazing colors it produces would offset any minor ghosting even if I did see it. the resolution is amazing, the people look even more lifelike, my wife thought I was watching a movie when she first saw me playing a game on it.

No.. Compared to the 5850 the 470 uses much more power.

As far as the original Crysis, there is a noticeable improvement going from a 275 GTX to a 470 GTX. It is very noticeable. Benchmark wise my lows were 27 FPS and highs were 37 with avg being 33 on the benchmark loops. (@ 1920 X 1080 00 AA/AF all MAX settings) I could not do that on my 275 GTX.

http://www.anandtech.com/show/2977/...x-470-6-months-late-was-it-worth-the-wait-/19

at idle its 173 watts vs 163 watts
load furmark is 408 watts vs 307
load crysis is 366 vs 277

so yeah it uses 30% more power than a 5850 at load (same at idle, half the time my computer is on its not gaming...) but it still uses the same as a single 8800GT so I am saving electricity ;)

Dude, the problem with going SLI/CF is, unless you wait a few generations for an upgrade, you have to REPLACE your SLI/CF setup with two GPUs to get an "amazing" upgrade. Otherwise, you're just getting a marginal upgrade (or none at all, depending on the game).

I'm surprised you didn't go with GTX 470 SLI or a single GTX 480.

I'm cranking 9600gt's in SLI and will probably upgrade to the same card or the 5850 which ever drops under 200 faster.

I should see large improvements at 2560x1600 or I will be a bit pist, kill a baby turtle pist.
