GTX 470 temps?

Curious what temps other people get at stock with this thing? (idle and load)
Also, what do you keep your fan speed at?

I recently bought the MSI 470 (Black friday deal) and at idle it seems go between 47-55c.

I have about 6 main fans in my case and have them facing the correct ways etc. So plenty of air flow.

Anyway, chime in if you could please.

Edit: Just installed Nvidia system tools and manually set the fan speed from 30% to 68%, idling at 40-42c now. Should I keep it at this % or go back to automatic? And should I keep using the Nvidia system tools or use something else?

That is what I am idling at , at least the primary card in SLI . My board is double spaced so it has decent air flow . If I run the two side panel fans I can it to run in the low 40s upper 30s without surfing or watching a video etc . Running most newer games it will peak around 75-85 depending on the game . Both cards are at stock speed , for now . My cards are idling with a 40% speed fan stock according MSI afterburner .
 
is afterburner worth installing?

I wasn't sure if their automatic fan speeds would make a difference.

Earlier today mine was idling at 30C. OC at 810 on core with fan 92%.


I'm using Silverstone Raven case which has good air flow position for this type of cooler.

I guess my only question is, should I set a fan profile in msi afterburner such as, 40c = 40% fan speed, and one other point for 70c = 75% fan speed, then it will scale between those depending on temp?

Or should I just set it to 60-70% at all times?
 
Auto worked fine for my 480 but it ran a little hotter than i wanted, I don't like noise or heat but of course I will take noise over heat any day of the week. Find the balance that is right for you. Monitor temps on auto and if you don't like them create a new fan profile or add aftermarket cooling.
 
Yea going to go play BC2 and test out the normal auto.

If it doesn't scale the fan enough to my liking I may tinker around with afterburner more.
 
If its like the 480 it'll allow the card to run a bit hot to prevent excessive noise. You'll probably have to determine what is important to you, noise or heat. With the reference cooler, it's one or the other, and even with fan @ 100 it'll still be a bit on the warm side.
 
Well, I ran Kombuster with some different profile settings in afterburner.

I basically put, 35c = 40% and another node for 80c = 75%, and let it scale.

Running kombuster it didn't go above 72c with those settings, and 75% fan speed is about all the higher I'd go without being annoyed. May lower it to 70%.

In my old P4 machine, my 9800xt would run 78c in games, so I don't think anything between 70-80 is really that high considering how beefy this card is.
 
During 100% cpu usage, 100% gpu usage, high i/o with mobo and disks, etc (such as found while gaming), overall heat generated will be higher and will be reflected in higher gpu temps. Low-mid 70s is fine in my book. Once it hits 78-80 or above for any period of time, that's where I fix the problem.

Many here will tell you that a high end part such as the 470/480 is engineered to operate 80-100C for years, and you can believe them if you like. I'm sick of pointing out the obvious to people.

I agree with what you are saying.

I think I'm going to leave the profile at that for now. I don't think any games I play atm will take it above 75c, even on higher settings.

I would have to think any video card running at temps of 80-100 for a long period of time wouldn't live long. Then again, CPU's and GPU's are made to work up to a certain temp and be fine for years. All I know is I don't like nvidia's automatic fan control. It hit 82c and the fan was barely at 60% (in kombustor's again)

leave auto fan...if the card is too hot, then the fan will kick up on it's own, if the fan doesn't kick up, than the card is not too hot....
 
Just played some BC2, 1900x1200, 4aa/Af, mostly medium settings with a few set to high.

Ran 69c at the highest, and stuck around 67 for the most part. Also got 60 fps in most places on the map with drops to 48.
 
Those are great temps but look for highest after at least an hour, the fermi's take a while to heat up, my 480 wouldn't reach max temp in furmark (with reference cooler and fan @ 100%) for over 15 minutes. That's one of the reasons I got the AXP, it takes it down cold and keeps it cold, and when it even gets a bit warm under insane load (66-68c) within 5 seconds of the load being dropped the temp goes back down to the 30s. Fantastic cooler and I'm not a fan of AC anymore.

Edit: If you run Furmark for 1 hour @ max shader complexity you should find the max temp. Run the fan @ a known number the entire time so you have a reference (I like to use 100% as a starter in case Furmark causing intense heating, but you should be safe @ %70).
 
I like furmark, but I'm not looking to find it's max temp just yet =)

Going to play with it for a week or so then maybe tinker around with it.

How easy are the aftermarket coolers to put on? If I'm not hitting 80c I'm not as worried, but just out of curiosity?
 
One more thing, the 470/480 overclock fantastic except for the heat with the stock cooler. If you really want a monster 470, slap on an aftermarket cooler or water.
 
It took me 2.5 hours to put on the AXP because I was extremely careful, but I wouldn't call it hard. You just have to take it slowly and stay very focused. I created a semi-sterile work area with every tool I might possibly need on an off-white background, washed my hands twice using strong soap to remove the oils, had a documentary in the background for stress reducing noise, etc. I took it completely seriously because it cost 390 and I rarely spend over 250 on a graphics card of any kind. I've got the money I just prefer to buy budget gaming stuff. Always been that way. This was a treat because I've been through so much BS in the last 6 months trying to get set with a graphics card so I can enjoy my well stocked steam library. 3 Gigabyte RMAs over my original video card (GTX 260 Super OC), bought a 460 after the first failed RMA and didn't like it much, bought an XFX 6870 and didn't care for the drivers (but I love MLAA), got the 2nd Gigabyte RMA back and that one was defective too so I gave the 6870 to the wife and splurged on a used EVGA 480 (310 here on the forum) + AXP for sweet tasty gaming win. Very happy now.
 
Ah gotcha.

I think my plan is to leave the stock cooler on and not OC it for a while.

Any game I play atm will play fine with it at stock. I could probably bump it up to 700mhz and it would still be fine with the stock cooler.

I did run in to a problem years ago trying to replace a 9500 pro's cooler with a new one.

Anyway, I'll have to see how it goes the next month or two.
 
The 470 is a great card, you'll love it. Solid drivers, fast, no-BS. My brother and his roommate both got the MSI 470 they had on sale at newegg over the break and are ecstatic (moving up from 8800 GT and a 460 1gb).

My wife loves the 6870 because she doesn't play a wide selection of games, primarily CS Source, The Witcher, Stalker, Mass Effect/Dragon Age, that kind of thing. RPGs and Action/FPS. For that, the 6870 is fabulous as hell provided you don't run into driver problems. MLAA is 'socks & hotdogs' awesome.
 
Update.

Ran a furmark test with stock clocks and voltages and fan settings.


Room temperature was at 20C.


Idles at 34 degrees then when Furmark starts instantly jumps to 44 degrees. Under load with furmark after about 36 minutes topped out at 89 degrees.

This is with the autofan control which idle rpms are at 40% then reach 62%. With some manual fan control the noise goes up but the temps significantly come down. Furmark is extreme example.

I was a bit worried about the heat and noise when i ordered mine but it wasn't at all. I run 1.037v 750/1500/1850 and maximum temperature in Kombustor (furmark) and OCCT is 80c and that sits at 75% fan which is audible but not by all means loud at all. When playing games it hits 70-75c max and that's 70% fan speed on on my fan profile, can't hear it at all over the game.



In conclusion, take the heat and noise comments with a bucket of salt.

Basically sit and play around with the custom fan profile because the stock profile is rubbish..

Rossi - What model are you using? And is that with stock cooling?

Your fan profile looks really similar to what I have mine at,except I have it at 40% fan speed idle then climbing up.
 
I have the Asus GTX470V2 on stock cooling in an Antec 900 with room temeprature at 21-23c.
 
I'm using a stock EVGA card that I've redone the thermal paste with MX-3.

Running BFBC2, with 90-99% GPU utilization, my card generally runs at around 80C give or take a few degrees at ~55% fan speed. It's in an FT02 and my ambient temps are usually 21C.

If I keep the fan at 65%, which is noticeable but not overly loud, then most games run at about 70C

I think I've got mine running cool enough. I ran Furmark for 30mins and it got up to 87c.

And with kombuster after 30minutes it ran at 76c.

I think overall it's running cool enough. If It doesn't go past 70c in BC2 at the settings I like I'm not going to worry.

I really can't see myself OCing this. At least not until I really need the performance boost.
