What is my better route for performance:

Two 260's in SLI stuck in DX10 land....Or one 460 (1gb) with one 260 running physx, reaping the fruits of DX11?

im in same boat here, id say spend the money on the 460 and then in the future grab another and go 460 sli with a 260 physx

260 sli is WAY faster than a single gtx460. running a gtx460 for a gpu and gtx260 for physx is silly because there are only 3-4 games that even use hardware level physx.

in some cases a gtx460 is little to no better than a gtx260 so just save your money until you can do a real upgrade.

in only a few cases is the 260 near the 460 in performance , in most cases its around 30% or more faster, plus u get dx11. however i may holdout for the next gen anyway because my 260 is doing fine for now, mafia 2 may test that though idk

I am not seeing the 30% advantage in "most cases" unless running AA. in Just Cause 2 and Borderlands it offered basically no more performance than a gtx260. and what is DX11 going to give you in reality? you wont be able to run things like tessellation and other advanced settings on a card like the gtx460 anyway. I used a gtx470 for a week and was not really impressed with the upgrade. for example Bad Company 2 was much faster in DX10 with the gtx260 than it was in DX11 with the gtx470 and there was no visual difference. part of that was my cpu because for some reason Bad Company 2 is also more cpu demanding on the higher DX setting. so in the end I had to force DX10 in that game anyway just to have the same performance I was already getting.

Was that back when there was that glitch with DX11 and DX10 where they ran like crap? Actually has that even been fixed? I haven't played BFBC2 for months, lol. DX11 in BFBC2 offered slightly better shadows... personally I couldn't tell the difference, I ended up running DX9 mode because that gave something like 50% better performance than DX10/11 and I could barely tell the difference graphically. So BFBC2 really isn't a great example of a DX11 game.

But anyway, for the most part I agree DX11 isn't a great reason to buy a GTX460. Not unless you plan on going SLI GTX460 down the track.

it was about 6 weeks ago when I used the gtx470.

The debate rages on. so its like spending 100-120 to get super, extra, way better performance, or 230-250 for only slightly better performance. that should be a no-brainer right? And from the sound of it the 460s in SLI would be only slightly better than the 260s in SLI. I think im leaning towards the cheaper option and maybe wait for the next gen middle of the road card...560 i guess? Hopefully that would offer both the significant speed boost and the DX11 features.

if there going to be widely available by march i may go with the next gen, if not ill likely be getting 2 460s and sli

well gtx460 sli would be pretty wasted in some games with your cpu. going with a multi gpu setup like that would be faster than gtx480 but only if you have a decent i5/i7 quad. in games like GTA 4, Ghostbusters, Red Faction Guerrilla, Bad Company 2, Prototype, Far Cry 2 and a few others you would see little to no improvement by adding that second card while using your E8400.
