GTX 260 minimum CPU

What's the minimum CPU that one would use with a GTX 260? I'm running a AMD 4400+ right now at 2.2Ghz. Is this enough CPU for this video card? If not, what's the minimum then?

its hard to say what the minimum would be but yes your 4400 is certainly going to hold that card back. some games need a quad for best results while most dont so it depends on what you are playing. also the res you are playing at can make a difference in just how bad your cpu is holding you back. personally I would say an e8400 is the lowest I would go with a card of that level.

I'm using a Phenom X4 9950 with my GTX260. It's now priced under $150.00.
1920x1080 gaming with all effects turned on. You may have to get a new board though.

Well, I have a 30" monitor, but I don't play at that res. My 9600GT can't handle it. I was just looking at the 260 since it seems as a reasonably priced upgrade from a 9600GT

how about we swap the monitors? I have a nice 24" that you gtx260 will handle with ease lol :D

Seriously though, anything less than gtx280 you'll be doing yourself a disservice. I mean, to experience your 30" in full glory, you need max memory bandwidth that only gtx280/285 can offer ;) :D

Haha, nice try but I'm sorry, no swapping here. I primarily use the monitor for general day to day computing. 30" has proving quite the upgrade from a 15" and my productivity has rocketed up as well. Gaming is a secondary use for the monitor, hence only the 9600GT and the inquiry about the 260. Sure, I would like a 285, but at 2x the price, I don't think it warrants the results. Also, the 260 would be a stop-gap for me, since I'll be rebuilding my rig in 1-1.5 years and it'll provide a healthy boost in PpD for Folding@Home over my 9600GT.

Thanks for the response guys, looks like I'll have to get a quick CPU upgrade along with the graphics card.

Your GTX260 will be CPU bound with anything less than a Core 2 or AMD equivalent running at less than 3.0GHZ.

E8400, or OC E7400.

I had an Athlon X2 5000+ Black Edition @ 3.4GHz...it held back my GTX260 in a number of games; The ice levels in Crysis, any outdoor area in Grand Theft Auto 4, large bot matches in Unreal Tournament 3, a few sections of FarCry2, some choppyness in Assassin's Creed, etc.

Currently have a Phenom II X4 920 @ 3.2GHz, no more bottleneck :D

Wow, it seems as though almost everything limits high-end video cards these days.

well think how much stronger the gtx260 is than cards that were around when the 4400 X2 cpu came out.

7800GTX, ftw! lol

Yeah, the cards have improved since the days of the original dual core CPUs in 2005.

Brings back memories.

On my other rig, I just ordered a GTS250, but my CPU is a 5000+ @ stock. So I upgraded to a Phenom 9600 X4. No more bottleneck!

YEAH! 7800GTX FTW!!! That was the card I bought when I first made my rig with this chip. So true how far graphics cards have come.
