I have a e2160 and a 5200+ and both processors are clearly bottlenecking my gtx260 I was wondering what is the minimum Intel processor where I wont see bottlenecking.

if you could oc that e2160 close to 3.0 or so that would eliminate about 90-95% of the bottleneck. if you really want to buy a cpu then an E8400 would do good except for GTA 4 which really needs a quad core for best results.

I do have it overclocked to 3.0 I just thought it was being bottlenecked for sure, I will have to run a few 3dmark tests.

well you are getting pretty close to 100% of what that card can do and dont worry about 3dmark tests. just play your games and enjoy them.

Ok thanks for that boost of confidence I just realized I must have gave away my e2160 M0 stepping chip when I gave away a pc because now I have the L2 stepping one darn it!

I have never had better than a e2160 but I have to build me a bad ass machine to record my mirrors edge time trial runs I have a world record and I am in the top 10 for a few.

You will see performance improvements all the way up to 3.7GHz, depending on the game and whether you want to clock the card (this needs a bit more CPU).
If the game requires lots of CPU and your CPU is maxed, the gfx performance will be limited.
Check CPU use during gameplay (leave taskmanager running), if it is around 90% or above, your CPU is being maxed.

Based on my personal research and testing, the an i7 @ 4.2Ghz is the most optimum processor speed for the GTX285, so probably 4.0Ghz for the 280.. the very minimum i would say is a Core2Duo/Quad at 3.6Ghz.

that doesnt really mean a whole lot. I have seen real arcade games use the crap out of a cpu. there are plenty of games that I am at 70% or 90% and overclocking may or may not help so that is not an accurate test.

Suggest a better one :)

you are talking little to no difference over 3.0-3.2 or so at 1680 with a gtx260 and max game settings. of course every game is differnent and having a high clocked quad certainly eliminates all doubt.

Probably an E8400 at 3.6GHZ or better. Anything much lower wouldn't be worth it IMHO unless you plan on playing at resolutions of 1920X1200 or higher with AA/AF. I remember when I ran one on my old Opteron 170 clocked at 2.81GHZ and getting nearly the same fps even at 1600X1200 with full AA/AF as my 8800GTS 512MB and even when I bumped up the resolution to 1920X1200 I was still getting the same fps as I did with 1600X1200, so that card definitely needs a lot of processor power to back it up.
