It's kind of amazing to see how far Nvidia was ahead with their 8800 series. Still, this name change is ridiculous. It makes less sense than the move from 9800gtx to 9800gtx+, at least there we got a die shrink.
For me, it makes sense. Having a lineup to cover low-end, mid-range and high-end, it should reflect so in names as well. The only thing that differs, is the performance. Using 9800gtx would be more misleading for new users and those not reading reviews as much. Its easy then to think that they are buying an "old tech" GF card, while it has the same features as the other GT2xx cards. There is no hardware features that seperates the generation, so nobody gets ripped off here. The name indicates its a lower performing card as well.
Those who are more active reading forums and reviews wont be affected by this anyway,
Cant see anything wrong with changing the name.
