I know theres a decent performance increase (I think at least..), but I can get a GTO2 for $280ish CND, or a 7800GT for roughly $200 more.. Im wondering if the performance difference warrents the almost $200 price difference. Any advice would be awesome.

BTW, the card would be going into my Aria, that'll end up having a 3000+ venice, or a 144 Opteron, with 2gb ram. Thanks.

I guess you don't live in the US. If you do, you can get a GT at Newegg for about $330. There was a sale a few days ago for $299 with a free copy of COD2.

I do believe the 7800 would do much better than GTO. But $200 in difference is so subjective. If you don't care about resolution, go with the GTO. I still play at 10x7 and with a card like the GTO, I think I would just be as happy.

It depends on the game really. I dont HAVE to play every game ever made at 1600x1200.. And to be honest, playing most of my games at that res, hurts my eyes more than anything, its pretty since the stuff is much sharper, but I find it harder to see for some reason.. I mean, I used to game with a 9000Pro, and thought it was the shit.. Then i got my 9800Pro a few months ago, thinking again, it was the shit.. So going to an almost-high-end card, I think I'd wet my self.. But I could also handle lower resolutions. I'd rather play my games at 1024x768 with everything maxed with vsync (I live by my vsync), and get a constant 60fps, rather than play at say, even 1280x1024, but have to drop down to lower settings and possibly rid my self of vsync. I also havent experienced what 6x AA is like, so that isnt a requirement.. I usually play at 2x temporal (since I tweak my games enuff to take advantage of temporal AA), which is basically 4x without the hit. Basically, if I can run my games at 1024x768 or possibly 1280x1024 (Thinking of getting an LCD, which most that I want are that for the native res), for a few years, or even just a year.. I'd be fine. Im pretty sure the GTO2 will be good enuff for what I do, I just wanted some reassurance really.

-Edit-

Oh yeah, power restrictions may be a factor too.. Im assuming the GTO2 would require less juice than the 7800GT yes? I wanna shove this stuff into my Aria, and I'll need to use that PSU until I can get my 1U psu to mod into the case.. But that wont be for awhile because I need to get my buddy who lives in the states to order it for me.

Well if you can get a Sapphire GTO2 then just unlock it to a X850XT PE... and you will be able to play at whatever res you want too :p

GTO would be the smarter buy if you're not willing to just throw your money around for a 7800.

Its not that Im not willing.. Im all for wasting my money, its just I want a new computer, like, now. lol, I could build my 7800GT system by Christmas, and the GTO2 one would probably be near that as well.. But I might be able to squeeze some more money out quicker for the GTO2, not really sure. /shrug

hey fellow canadian~
I'm on the same boat as you
GTO2 or 7800gt...
cheapest gto2 is around 260, cheapest 7800gt is around 430, which is this
http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=1549681&CatId=0

but if I were to go for 7800gt, I would rather pay 30 more and get this instead
http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php?sku=16412&vpn=256-P2-N517-AX&manufacture=eVGA

copper heatsink, factory overclocked, lifetime warranty and free COD2

so, GTO2 for 300 or 7800gt for 530

I've decided to go with 7800gt but wait till next month, hoping for some price drop, while keeping my eyes on NCIX sales, they usually have one 7800gt card on sale every week exception of this week..
problem is that GTO2 is limited quantity so probably not available by next month or so.
If you are thinking about setting one up near Christmas, I think you can pretty much forget about getting GTO2, unless used one.

If I may humbly offer up my own benchies.

Code:
[b]3dmark 01[/b]
NX6600GT - Stock = 16583
NX6600GT - 560/1160 = 20447

X800GTO2 - Stock = 19704
X800GTO2 - 520/590 = 20444
X800GTO2 - STOCK - 16 PIPE = 19973
X800GTO2 - 520/590 - 16 pipe = 20837

7800GT - stock = 22283

[b]3dmark 03[/b]
NX6600GT - STOCK = 8355
NX660GT - O/C = 9274

X800GTO2 - Stock = 9254
X800GTO2 - O/C = 11045
X800GTO2 - STOCK - 16 PIPE = 10173
X800GTO2 - 520/590 - 16 pipe - 12089

7800GT - STOCK = 14704

[b]3dmark 05[/b]
NX6600GT - Stock = 3587
NX6600GT - O/C = 4075

X800GTO2 - Stock = 4441
X800GTO2 - O/C = 5525
X800GTO2 - STOCK - 16 PIPE = 5003
X800GTO2 - 520/590 - 16 pipe = 6180

7800gt - stock = 7226

System in question :
A64-3500+, 1GB PC3200 - CAS3 - SINGLE RAPTOR 36.7 - EVGA NFORCE 4 SLI

Video cards in line-up
MSI NX6600GT 128mb

Sapphire Radeon X800GTO2 pipes eventually unlocked, but benchies run before and after
at stock and "overclocked - which really isn't overclocking at all" [520/590] speeds

and a single evga 7800GT completely stock as reference.

I feel that once I get some "performance" ram in there, and get my improved cooling solution done, I'm going to be able to overtake the 7800GT's stock performance.. But these benchies above are with the system at stock speeds.

Since the x800gto2 *is* an x850 as you know, the 520/590 isn't really an overclock at all, it's stock for the higher end card I was turning it into.

I've since gotten the video card to 590/650 with 0 artifacts, and that's with it's stock cooler.
Wait until there is chilled water on that puppy. I"m not happy with the temp it runs at though. (65-67c...) but it is artifact free in ati-tool AND gaming.

For my own peace of mind, I am running at 550/600 right now with a 43c temp.
