I found with this games graphic settings that if I put the texture setting on anything but normal, it exceeds my VRAM by a good amount. I can run it at normal with everything pretty much cranked up, but once I turn up the texture setting the meter bar goes into the red. I finally did manage to run textures on high with lowering some of the other options like shadows, shaders. Im running SLI with 2 670's and the game see's my VRAM capacity as over 4GB. I see other people's systems where they have one 970 and are saying they have everything turned up including MSAA??

Has anyone else experienced this?? Im kind of like WTF is it with this game that it blows out all my memory, while other systems with a single card are just fine at maximum options.

For some reason with multi-GPU configurations the game adds the VRAM for all cards together, but it seems like it multiplies the VRAM requirements for each setting as well to keep it in line with the real limits of the card. You are limited to 2GBs of VRAM total where as people with a single 970 have access to 4GBs.

something doesnt sound quite right. I have a 4gb 980 config in sli with everything on very high but no msaa @ 4k and I see my vram floating around 3.8 while messing around online.

Thats because his real vram use is around 2GB per card but GTA V combines the vram use for multiple cards.
Derangel covered it.

That is very weird, my friend has 2 970's with 4GB VRAM each, and everything turned up he is staying well under 4GB. I tried it with mostly max settings and while my FPS easily stayed at about 60FPS, my VRAM was hitting well over 1900 GB and sometimes surpassed 2GB on each card.

I'm having the same issue as you with my 295x2. My issue lies with how much VRAM the game is actually using opposed to what it estimates it will use. I have mine well within the range that the game shows with the bar, but when I'm in game and watching MSI afterburner on the side I see it exceeding my 4GB per card limit easily and my settings aren't even cranked to the max by any means. 2560x1440 with only FXAA, no MSAA and no advanced graphics turned on.

Yeah I dont know what the deal is, Im thinking SLI may not be working correctly. I dont understand how one 970 with 4GB of VRAM stays well under 4GB with everything cranked up and using MSAA 2X. While 2 670's with 2GB of VRAM each get blown out past 4GB.

SLI ram is not additive, you still only have 2gb, same as you would only using one card.
SLI seems to be borked.

ah I see now. I was under the impression that the op had 2x 4gb card not 2x 2gb.

Isn't there some memory compression at play here as well? (for the maxwell cards)

In 1440p with MSAA 2x and everything else maxed I can't even reach 3.5Gb on a single GTX 970 (I don't play with those settings but I run out of horsepower long before VRAM becomes an issue with this specific game)

I am currently running the game on very high textures and other assorted features on my GTX 660ti. It only has 2GB of ram, and the game says im using 2.5GB. There are no gameplay issues. I very occasionally see a screen tear, which I assume its texture memory based, but its rare. Rare enough I dont worry about it.

Dont worry about that meter in the game. Let nvidias drivers do their best work and use what works for you.

u have no right to run game on very high with that shitty video card man...

To max things out at 1080p you need at least 4GB of Vram. At least that's what I'm seeing. (I can't do it)

Let me clarify, im not maxed out. I have everything set to high or very high, with textures set to very high.

My ram usage is listed at 2537MB, but it runs fine on my 2GB card. Im just trying to say dont take their counter as some gospel. Its easily worked around by my card in practice.

Try and set Population Variety to half or a third. It should allow you to increase texture quality at the expense of seeing more clones of the same person.

Decreasing Population Variety and density is one of things I tweaked by putting it at about half. What is strange is draw distance has no effect on the VRAM meter what so ever, other settings also have no bearing on the VRAM meter such as grass and tessellation. I set Grass at Ultra then lowered it to Normal, no effect, I did the same with Tessellation and very minimal effect. With some tweaking I finally was able to run Textures on Very High, keeping the ram just under the threshold. I'll have to see how it works out next weekend. It kind of sucks that I have 2 670's and Im not able to crank up the settings in this game. I thought BF4 was very demanding graphically and I had not problems with running it.

There is a lot more going on in GTA V than a game like BF4. Think of all that the game has to simulate and how few pop ins that you'll see in game.

i never dabble with sli or crossfire - maybe i'm a fool but i think having two cards doesn't combine vram - if you have two 2gb cards you get the extra processing power but the system will only use 2gb of vram (it does not double). right?

thats correct....but this may change when dx12 games finally come out, course by then the cards processing power will be to weak:) cause thy will program the newer drivers to make the newer stuff look that much better. lol i bet both teams do this commonly

It will need to be at least 2016 before that happens, which by then more powerful cards would have come out to blow many of the older SLI setups out of the water. I think it will take at least 780ti's to see any tangible benefits of that VRAM pooling, but I'd say 980ti's may benefit, and 970's would probably benefit by helping the cards avoid that issue.

I dont think the in-game memory counter means anything.

Or maybe the maxwell driver has a lot more work.

I have every setting on max except no MSAA and shadows on softer at 2560x1600. The game claims this takes 5gb of vram, but I have no actual performance problems with SLI 970s. In fact with v sync on I seem to be locked at 60fps.

Read [H]'s review - the settings they are running on the SLI 980s indicate more vram in game than the cards have.

This doesn't change anything for people who have performance problems, but does suggest the in game meter needs adjustment.

Also, with how poor SLI scaling is in the current reviews, I think future drivers will continue to improve performance.
