Ive seen some screen shots of gta 4 and when i play the game it looks nothing near what i have seen even at max settings. does anyone know the best looking gta 4 graphics mods?

The way you go about it depends on the version your running. If you downloaded the game from Steam you'll automatically be on version 1.0.7.0. The best modding version is 1.0.4.0 because of the engine changes they made with the latest version. There is a way to downgrade the Steam version, however, here:

http://www.gtagaming.com/forums/showthread.php?t=128300

The benefits of running 1.0.4.0 is because with 1.0.7.0 there are a number of bugs including flickering red sky, overbright cutscenes/indoor scenes and a few missing options like SSAO. Just be careful when you install xliveless because it will change your saved games directory. If you're getting crashes at startup ("GTA has stopped working") most likely there are leftover files conflicting with the game if you played it for a while under Steam. Also don't forget to disable automatic updates to GTAIV through Steam, although you won't be running the game from there anyways (make a shortcut to GTALauncher.exe instead and bypass Steam).

The main graphics mod that everyone is using these days is called iCEnhancer. The latest version is 1.25. This version has compatibility for version 1.0.7.0 but there are missing items and the bugs listed above. There are also 1.0.4.0 files in the package as well. You can find it here:

http://www.gta4-mods.com/misc/icenhancer-125---enb-graphic-mod-f9503

The best config (IMO) for iCEnhancer is the one by H1Vltg3 located here:
http://www.gtagaming.com/downloads/gta-iv/misc-mods/9557

When in-game you can enable/disable DoF by pressing 'P'.

For info regarding all of the config options go here:

There are also two major texture packs that people have been using: Better City Textures and Ultimate Textures. I'm not personally using either of these two at the moment but from everything I've read people are pretty split between the two. You only choose 1 of the 2 by the way, don't try to install both at once.

Better City Textures (7.4 GB): http://www.gtagarage.com/mods/show.php?id=5906
Ultimate Textures (4.5 GB): http://www.gta-downloads.com/en/gta4/total-conversions/11691-gta-iv-ultimate-textures.html

I also have been following the NeoGAF thread with good info here:
