GT4 + 2405FPW problems

(i couldnt decide if this should go in displays or gaming, but i figured gaming was better..)

Ok, a few days back i got myself a new 2405FPW, so far i love it. When i got it one plan i had was to connect my PS2 up to it via component, since ive always used my PS2 via my pc, but in the past ive used S-Video in (on my video card) and then dscaler, which isnt exactly high quality. So i got it all set up via the monitor and it does look ALOT nicer and sharper, even at 480i.

However, GT4 supports some HD modes, such as 480P and 1080i (which isnt really 1080i, but still) and this is where the problems show up. 480i (normal) in GT4 looks ok, its not that bad really and certainly playable. Moving to 480p gives huge problems, it almost looks like the game is running in super low res, theres LOADS of jaggies/shimmer/you name it on EVERYTHING in the game against 480i and its pretty much unplayable because its so bad. 1080i isnt perfect either, the jaggie problem isnt an issue, and the res looks ok, but the image is very 'blocky' All the text is blocky, theres blocks in the textures, sky, everything, just looks pretty low quality, worse than 480i.

Anyone got any ideas why the HD modes in GT4 provide such low quality via my 2405? seems weird that 480i looks better than both 480p/1080i. I noticed someone posted a picture of GT4 in 1080i mode here which doesnt look blocky (small image though), so im really starting to wonder what the issue is. As i said, 480i is fine, just when trying 480p/1080i the problems show up. Dont have any other 'HD' PS2 games i could try, all the others are just 480i also, so any advice would be great.

From what I've read (in regards to A/V) stuff, 480P (Progressive Scan) is only supported on Component connections, not Composite or S-Video. Supposedly the best way to hookup a console to a VGA monitor is via a vga box

Im using component cables for all the modes, ive read stuff on the 2405FPW supposedly not support HD on component inputs, however, theres seems alot to say it does too, so this is very in the air. However, this doesnt explain why 480p looks like ass against 480i...

That and the PS2 doesn't support any HDTV formats natively. It is all done in software, so when you are running the GAME in HDTV the moniter is still in 480i mode. Check for yourself I have the same moniter and doesn't look that great playing GT4.

You need to check whatever setting on the 2405 that takes care of doing 1:1 or stretching the image to the available screen size of the monitor. I don't own this monitor, but on my HD LCD, if I stretch a non widescreen game, it looks like shit.

You shouldn't be having the problems you are having. Check your PS2 and make sure the dashboard is set to widescreen display, and component out.

And no, the monitor should not still be @ 480i when the game is running in 480p or 1080i.

My game looks like the example given and it is in 480i on the monitor and 1080i on the PS2, the PS2 is not outputting any HDTV signals.

Sorry but I don't have a digital camera or I would take a pic, and the PS2 is connected via component video.

Well my PS2 does output in HDTV modes, the 2405FPW even says its in 480p and 1080i modes, they just looks rubbish, so its outputting in the right modes. I dont believe the PS2 does true 1080, its a lower res than 1920*1080 that the game resizes to 1920*1080 (but it still higher than 480i/p) so it shouldnt look blocky like it does, and 480p is just weird. i cant show what 480p does via picture, because its more a motion thing with all the jaggies, ill see if i can get a video of it on my digi cam sometime. Ill try getting a picture of the blocky 1080i tomorrow..too dark now to get a good picture.

As for settings, the dashboard is set to 16x9 and component output, GT4 is set to 16x9 and then whichever video mode ('normal' [480i) 'progressive' [480p] 'HDTV' [1080i]). i've also tried different settings on the monitor. Going to 1:1 from fill at 1080i doesnt do much, since its only 1920*1200 vs 1920*1080 anyway, makes no difference to quality...havent bothered trying 1:1 at 480p..because 480i looks ok on fill, so by rights 480p should too.
