Mates mates!! With the unprecedented demand for new graphics computational units, one must be vigilant when shopping for one! Danger lurks behind the green flower logo!!

Remember when Nvidia’s now-defunct GeForce Partner Program aimed to provide “transparency” for gamers? How bitterly ironic, then, that the company is now selling two grossly different versions of its GeForce GT 1030 graphics card. They’re both the same price. They both carry the same exact name. But one of them will disappoint entry-level PC gamers by delivering less than half the performance of the other.

I wish I was exaggerating.

This GT 1030 isn’t like the others, but can you[+]MSI
Before we get into the details here, let’s have a quick history lesson. In May 2017 Nvidia released the original GT 1030 and it was regarded as a very affordable dedicated graphics card, ideal for first-time PC builders or buyers on a budget. It shipped with a base GPU clock of 1227 MHz and 2GB of GDDR5 memory with a 64-bit memory bus. That yielded a memory bandwidth of 48 GB/s. That’s nothing remarkable, but at a $70 launch price the GT 1030 could play a modest amount of games at 1080p and maintain 60 FPS.

Fast forward to March 2018 and Nvidia stealthily reconfigured some GT 1030 cards with 2GB of DDR4 memory — the same used in most smartphones and desktop PCs — instead of GDDR5. As Hardware Unboxed points out today in an exhaustive video exposing this problem, the net result is a crippling 65% decrease in memory bandwidth.

Today, if you’re a PC gamer shopping for a sub-$100 graphics card and aren’t necessarily a geek who pays attention to specs like this, you can roll the dice and up with a GT 1030 that is 118% percent faster than another GT 1030. One hundred eighteen percent faster.

What does this look like in actual gameplay practice? To put it bluntly, it’s revolting.

In the video linked above, Hardware Unboxed put both versions of the GT 1030 into their test bench and came out with results like this:

Battlefield 1, Low Quality, 1080p: The GT 1030 with 2GB GDDR5 scored an average 61 FPS, while the GT 1030 with 2GB of DDR4 scraped by with an average 28 FPS.

Far Cry 5, Low Quality, 720p: The GT 1030 with 2GB GDDR5 managed an average 50 FPS, while the crippled GT 1030 with 2GB of DDR4 couldn’t even hit 30 FPS.

Fortnite, Medium Quality, 1080p: As the most popular game on the planet, it’s easy to imagine a ton of PC users wanting to give their system just enough of an upgrade to enjoy Fortnite. While the game is playable on both versions of the card, the differences are drastic. In this test, the GT 1030 with 2GB GDDR5 locked in above 60 FPS (66 FPS to be exact) while the DDR4 version only produced an average of 38 FPS.

Many more games were tested, and the pattern above was consistently reproduced. The DDR4 version of the same card can only produce about half the average framerate of its more sophisticated GDDR5 counterpart.

Even AMD’s Ryzen 5 2400G — an APU with integrated graphics — beats the GT 1030 DDR4 version every time.

The prices are identical. The products are[+]NEWEGG
When you can look at a box and see the same name and spend the same amount of money but walk away with one GPU that delivers only half the performance of the other, that’s an entirely different class of product. Applying any logic to this massive performance gap should yield only one scenario: giving the card a different product name altogether. Call it a GeForce GT 1020. Call it a GT 1030 Budget Edition. Differentiate it somehow.

There simply is no excuse for Nvidia deceiving its customers this way, especially with such a high-volume part aimed at mainstream users. The reviews for the GT 1030 have been published for over a year. The data is there to make an informed decision. Except that now the data has become irrelevant and outright wrong for the average consumer shopping on name alone. The type of consumer shopping for an entry-level graphics card isn’t paying attention to hard specs.

So if you, like many others, are in the market for an entry-level GeForce card (or potentially a PC from a large OEM like Dell or HP), train your eyes on the specs. If it says “DDR4″ on the box, keep looking. Better yet, don’t support a company with a lengthy history of anti-consumer practices just like this.
Plz be careful out their!!💚

Why are they rebirthing this issue again?

The reason this shit happened in the first place was because miners were exhausting supplies of GDDR5, so they used ddr4 for the 1030.

When the top three sub-$100 gt 1030 cards at Newegg are now back to GDDR5 (even in a mining rush), I consider the matter closed:L

Repeat after me: the GDDR5 shortage is over!. The GDDR5 shortage is over!

This is the only card in the top ten that is ddr4.

Yeah, the DDR vs GDDR thing is a big problem with low-end GPUs. Been going on for well over a decade and shows no sign of stopping. GT 1030 is the latest victim of this malarkey but sadly far from the first.

GDDR vs. DDR
What is the difference? Never knew there were two kinds of DDR ram
Is DDR5 a thing yet? I just upgraded in March of 2020 to a DDR4 PC while my old DDR3 PC went to secondary duty to replace the DDR2 PC that was serving my secondary duty tasks (testing various programs & hardware that I would not let near my main PC with a thirty five and a half foot pole)
I also have a Hackintosh on my DDR3 secondary PC now but I think the Hackintosh is harder or impossible to be done now after Catalina or the BigSur (BigSpy) ones because Apple has their own hardware now

GDDR is optimized for high clock rates at the expense of latency (GPUs care a lot more about bandwidth) while regular DDR is more optimized as a balance between the two, generally with a focus on lower latency as CPUs are more latency-sensitive. That's the main difference. GDDR2 was spun-off from DDR1 in the very early 2000s and the standard has continued to evolve separately while sharing features with regular DDR.

DDR5 is expected to release later this year or next year.

Might ethash favor low latency over serial bandwidth?
https://eth.wiki/en/concepts/ethash/ethash

Let minors spraytrace etherial or whaverer gives them old deedee.
Then given them 2G so they can't. Declare a feast to honor travesty!

Once tempted to strap fanless 1030's onto a box fan for neoscrypt.
Fortunately my exchange got hacked, gave up the get rich stupids.
Still got eight 1050ti's in a Rosewill chassis thats now my footrest.

ethash favors bandwidth. ddr would be terrible for minining and high end high bandwidth cards will continue to be good for mining.

Its worth noting that there has been asics for ethash for quite awhile now. the lack of supply isnt really because of miners like we used to see.

Green flower?

Nvidia's logo is an eye. As in the green eyed monster. As in jealousy personified.

There are exceptions to every rule:

The 1070 running GDDR5 was a lot lower latency than the 1080 on GDDR5X, and is faster on Etherium. That is why miners helped make the new 1070 Ti disappear.

If you have "enough" bandwidth, then I guess latency is preferred?

You are right there is more too it. Especially when your talking sub 30mh/s cards as the bottleneck is normally elsewhere.

Moded timing also helped the hashrate of rx 480.

The article's from 2018. Not sure why it's being brought up now.
That's funny, I didn't notice that.

Then again given the current shortage it could be a timely PSA if that's all someone can find. It should still work as a video out which is all I would buy it for anyway but they should still make it clear that the cards are fundamentally different.
