I currently have an A64 3000 (running at 3200) paired with a 9800Pro. I was thinking about upgrading my video card as i suspect it is a bit of a bottleneck. I was thinking of either the 6800GT or the X800XT. Which of these is the better buy? Or should i stick with my 9800Pro and wait this round out? Cheers in advance.

The 9800pro is a good card! Ask yourself this question is it fast enough for the games you play? The GT and XT though are certainly better card's. I personaly chose to buy a X800pro primarily because it was the first card to hit the shelves in my area. Then got lucky it was a VIVO. Performed the softmod and now have an XT PE...I love it, it's super fast and have no problems running Doom 3 at all.

Uhh... x800XT already has 16 pipes.. If you're going to upgrade and have the choice between a 6800GT and x800XT, get the XT.

This is probably the best peice of advice your gonna find. I suggest you go with what this guy said. If you got 4 bones burning a hole in your pocket then by all means spend it on something. However if that 9800Pro is doing justice in all of your current games then it couldnt possibly hurt for a spring refresh imo.

The 6800 GT also already has 16 pipes, and it tends to be about $100 cheaper, and overclock like a champion. I like money, so I'd get the 6800 gt.

depends on how concerned you are about $$$...

if money isn't important, the XT is a bit faster in some games...

however, I can't really say that the XT is that much faster that it's worth the extra $100...

HighwayAssassins listed '16 pipes' as a reason to purchase a GT over an XT. I simply was stating that it isn't a deciding factor, since they both already have 16 pipes.

The poster also didn't mention money. He simply said GT or XT, so I responded, XT.

thats what i meant, it has 16 pipes...i never said the XT didnt, i said the GT does, and it is cheaper. instead of everyone flaming me, why dont you realize that yes, the GT does have 16 pipes, regardless of what the XT has

spending $100 more for an XT that isn't significantly faster than the GT and has less features that could mean lesser performance or lesser IQ in the future really doesn't make much sense for me, which is why I recommend 6800GT.

Once again, the poster didn't mention money as on object. I'm sure if he had a problem spending the money, he would have stated so.

i am a proud owner of a x800xt, but from what i've read and seen, the 6800 cards are more cost-effective in benchmarking and games, so if you want performance at a lower cost, i would consider the 6800 cards to be it

Get the XT-PE or in the end you're gonna be disappointed.

what makes you say that?? if anything the GT with ps3.0 will last longer...and considering how well it overclocks......its really about how much he wants to spend...if he can afford the extra 100$...then the XT would be slightly better than the gt......however if hes trying to save as much money as possible the 100$ could be better spent somewhere else....

now, get angry if i'm wrong, but...

if you can spend the money on the x800xt, why not get the 6800 Ultra?

just my 2 cents....

well in most games the XT definitly beats the GT and Ultra with the eyecandy on, but the GT is definitly the bargin. If you want top of the line then goodluck trying to find a XT in stock or at MSRP.

How the hell would you know? What if some game company released the best game to date and it ran like shit on ATi hardware because it lacked PS 3.0 support? Not likely but your statement was complete BS. Theres no way for you to know that. The Nvidia architecture has more features and is the more future proof technology. Plain and simple. We have no idea if these technologies will be utilized during this architectures lifetime. None of us can tell the future.

Personally I don't think either card would dissappoint. If money is no object get the X800XT-PE or even consider a 6800 Ultra. If money is an object than the 6800GT is a good bang for the buck card in the high end price bracket.

quoted for common sense :)

The 6800 series is a smarter purchase, period. You get more features that mean it will be more future proof with potential better performance (sm3.0) and look better (openexr hdr) on games coming out later this year and next year. If you want to spend $400, get a 6800GT, $500 get a 6800U. The failure of ATI to include SM3.0 support could have serious implications for the x800 lines performance once games that make heavy use of SM3.0 arrive, and their lack of OpenEXR HDR means you will be getting lower quality HDR or no HDR at all on some of the upcoming games with the x800. Not to mention Geometry Instancing is now disabled by default in ATI drivers in order to pass whql testing - how many devs are going to code for a feature that 95% of the people who buy the card in the store won't even have switched on? In other words, even if the x800 series was hypothetically 10% faster consistently, which its not - at the same price points the x800 gets beat from $149-$400 and its about a tie at the $500 pricepoint, it would still not be the smartest buy if you are looking for something to last you more than 6 months.

Unless you are particularly enamoured with ATI, the 6800 is the best investment to ensure best IQ & performance on both today and tomorrow's games. When moved to the pci-express bus, the choice becomes even more obvious with Nvidia offering SLI on their $199 and up cards.

I have been a diehard ATI fan for my entire gamming career... Take that into consideration when I say the following:

$$Dollar / Performance, the 6800 line simply outshines the X800 series.

btw: I though the xt costs 450

msrp is 450, stores are charging $500+

You can get a GT for under $400, and getting a 6800U would be the best choice at the $500 bracket.

The real answer is, the 6800 GT and x800 XT are apples and oranges. The GT is a cheaper, lower-end model than the XT. So it performs a bit less in most games most of the time, but is also cheaper by $100-150. For most people, the price difference probalby isn't justified by the performance gain.

Bottom line, comparing products that aren't comparable in price is a little silly. If I could get an XT or GT for the same price, I'd get the XT, but the GT is cheaper, and close enough to the XT that I don't think the price increase is warranted (or the 6800 Ultra's markup, for that matter).

The correct comparison is between the x800 Pro and 6800 GT, or the x800 XT and the 6800 Ultra. The GT beats the Pro at almost everything, and the Ultra and XT are probably too close to call, the Ultra takes 2 slots and 2 molex power connections, but the XT doesn't have PS3 like the Ultra does. You could argue between those two all day long.

im willing to make a bet that many of the [H]'s 6800gt's never even use ps 3.0(besides testing out the farcry hack) before they upgrade to a newer video card. thats what many x800 and 6800 owners have in common here at [H].. ah well. it make a good argument in a nvidia vs ati debate at least!

Wasn't a hack, was an official patch that was pulled for stability problems on ATI cards.

Nah, there will be numerous sm3.0 games coming out this xmas... Next one I will pick up is likely Painkiller: Battle out of Hell

That being said, how many people enjoyed the fact that they had the option to skip a generation with the 9700PRO due to its fast peformance *and* superior featureset? The 6800 series is in a similar position now, and users may be able to skip a gen since it already has SM3.0/OpenEXR HDR builtin, while x800 owners will be forced to upgrade to R520 if they want to use these features for performance or IQ gains in upcoming games. Since the 6800 and x800 both perform well, the clear edge goes to the 6800 due to its potential to last longer with its superior featureset and better value.

As for the whole 2 slot/2 molex thing, its irrelevant unless you have a SFF case. The slot under the AGP slot is the worst possible PCI slot you can use in terms of resource sharing, and motherboards generally have 5 PCI slots - losing one that would impact performance of your computer if you used it is not an issue. As for two molexes, the second molex is simply for better overclocking on the 6800U. If you can only spare one plug for some reason, the 6800U comes with a Y adapter.

x800xt is the fastest video card money can buy, price/perfromance goes to 6800GT.

I think you should review recent benchmarks with the newest Nvidia 66.xx drivers as your statement is no longer valid. Now they are trading blows, with 6800U winning some games, and x800xtpe winning others

and what games have announced they will support openEXR HDR? heres a hint, the figure looks like a donut.

FarCry 1.3
Unreal 3

looks like the upcoming painkiller expansion might support it as well

ATI has stated they are incorporating OpenEXR HDR into R520, so its pretty obvious it will get use in the future as both major videocard manufs will be suppoting it.

i have an idea, SEARCH through the other 900 fucking threads about this topic.. pick one and buy it.

Far Cry. Unreal 3.

Hey you said ANNOUNCED, not released.

Edit: Ah Tranz beat me to it.

near future is what im referring to. i just don't think getting a 6800 for those features is a good reason to get one, for those that upgrade their vid card more than once a year.

edit: oh and donuts can be shaped in a variety of ways. so shove it! ;)

I just got back from the pub to find all these replies! Thanks to everyone for their input, it's greatly appreciated. Money is a consideration as i have a ton to stuff to buy for my house, plus xmas is coming up soon. The ultra and PE are definitely out of the question. Hell, you can't even buy them over here in the UK yet. The prices are fairly close between the XT and the GT over here, with both being available. The XT is going for about £320 and the GT £280 (cheapest prices i can find). So, what you all reckon?

That's over a $70 difference. The XT is better, but's it not $70 better. Get the GT and OC it past Ultra speeds. An OCed GT and OCed XT would probabley match each other anyways.

i tend to agree with this conclusion. the fact is that the X800XT can be overclocked to a PE, and the GT can be overclocked to an Ultra. knowing this, the only concern is price, if your not biased. and the cheapest of the two would be the GT by far.

Um... I know I'm new here, but my input whould be this:

XT: Fast at raw speed, fast with eye candy.
GT: Faster at raw speed, getting there with eye candy (can be worked on with drivers because we already know it has the raw speed to do it)

All the eye candy stuff, well, most, not all, is related to the driver revisions and or driver optmizations. If you think about it, ATi has had alot more practice at that since they're still using the driver sets that they used back with the original R3xx series. Not saying that they don't both optmize because by god they do, but nVidia still has alot of performance to pull out because we know it has the raw speed to do so.

I run my Ultra with all opts off and DST off and my games don't play any different )~4 FPS)and look better then before. As long as it's consistent, (which mine are locked at something above 60 regardless. Except for FarCry... crappy coding... great game... lol) I'm happy.

Both cards perform exceptionally well in modern games and if you go off benchmarks you got another thing coming.

Either card is great, personally I'd take the GT because it has further time to mature. All else fails, buy it, then sell it 3-6 months down the line and get whatever you want.

I shall add that i have no brand loyalty at all. I just buy whatever is best in the price bracket i can afford. I shall probably wait until december to see what bonus i get at work and then make a final decision. I'm maybe leaning towards the cheaper GT at the moment.
