Thought I'd ask the experts, since I have zero experience with this . . .

I'm thinking about buying a PC that comes with a GT 720, then adding a midrange GPU (possibly the 750 Ti). Would the GT 720 that it comes with be of any benefit as a dedicated PhysX card?

Cool, thank you. It's better than throwing it out, right? If I end up doing it, I'll report back on how it performs.

Or you could try selling it, and put the money towards a higher end card then the 750ti, 760 for example.

That's probably where the smart money is at.

The GT 720 is pretty darn weak for a gaming card. You would have to test it to be sure, but I wouldn't be surprised if it hindered performance with a 750Ti.

If it's being used with a 750ti it won't hurt performance. Physx uses shader cores to do the processing. The 750ti doesn't have a plethora of shaders, so it needs to use all it has for graphics processing. Offloading the Physx processing even to a 520 should give a better overall gameplay experience, than running physx on the 750ti alone. I think your best bet, however, is selling the 720 and putting it towards a 760 so you have more general usage power. Games that use physx are few and far between.
