I'm not looking to go overboard on the OCage (no need), but I AM looking for something more than the standard HSF - hence I'm down to two choices - both are from CoolerMaster and are referenced above. Given the scant $4 spread, which makes better sense given i5-3570K and double-height DIMMs (Corsair Vengeance DDR3-1600)?

While I don't have an answer for you, I'm genuinely curious as to which will fit.

It's between these two and one of those Corsair water units on sale for $40 for me.
 
You might have to raise the front fan to clear the ram.
I have the regular sized ram(no heatspreader) on a Asrock MB and the fan is just about resting on the top of it.

If you ever need ram for another computer, replace it with those sticks, then buy some of the Samsung low profile.

I have the EVO HSF.
 
are you populating all 4 DIMM slots ?

I have the 212 evo on a Asus P8z77 V pro with Crucial Ballistix Tactical Tracer 8GB (2 sticks) .
I have them in 2 and 4 slot . If I tried to put in 1 slot closest to CPU socket it would be tight fit , looks like horizontally it would be very close depending on width of DIMM . vertically the Crucial Ballistix Tactical Tracer Dimm's are about even with bottom of HS fan .
That said you can move the fan up a notch or so and still cover the HS good so might be good there depending on how high your DImm are compared to the Crucial Ballistix .

I think the evo has only pluses over the 212 plus . Pretty sure only difference is base (no spaces on heatpipes ) and fan used .
 
I used both until recently installed H60 , The Evo kept my temps about 3-4c cooler then 212+ hyper but i don't have any proof of that . They are both good CPU coolers.
 
I have both the 212+ and Evo with Corsair Vengeance on a Asus P8Z77 Pro and it will hit the first ram slot unless you move the fan up a bit or put it on the other side in a pull set up. Same thing on my kids AMD Phenom II setup. great coolers for the price. I highly recommend them both.
 
If there's only a $4 difference between them I would get the Evo. It performs about 1* C better when both have the same fan. The Evo also has a better fan than the 212+.

OTOH you could get the 212+ instead and put that $4 toward a good fan like the Gentle Typhoon, and that would more than make up for any advantage that the Evo has.
