my drive is making a grinding noise only when its booting the OS etc from a cold boot, it wont make the noise even if i turn it off and back on. but if its allowed to sit some time then i start it it grinds till the OS is done bootin, any suggestions? oh yeah had this drive for over a year and this is new development its a 60mb WD with the 8mb cache

grinding is bad, Id guess bearings
back it up
see if you can get an error from the HDD manufacturers diagnostic and RMA it
see if you can get an RMA without an error
likely its days are numbered

if you could document a substantial SMART parameter change, that might get you an RMA
