Grinding noise, please help!!!

Just recently, I have noticed a grinding noise upon startup. I only hear it if the sys has been off for a while. The grinding sounds seems to continue and it sounds like something is grinding to a halt. Then it stops. Windows starts up normally, so I don't suspect the hard drive. When I startup with my ear inside, I don't think it's the CDRW. because the access light comes on then goes off. But the sound continues. I reached in suspecting the case fan, and stop it. the sound continues. I am left with the fan on the CPU, the Northbridge cooler and the video card. I think its a fan but i'm not entirely sure. Some advice on this matter would help.

Probably a fan going bad or perhaps a wire hanging in a fan. I've had fans make insanely loud grinding noise when first turning on my system. Few minutes later it fades away.
 
Just unplug the CD-RW to make sure that's not it. Same with the fans (well, the CPU one you'd have to replace with another one you know is working fine, but still). Can just unplug them to make sure they're not the cause... Or if you have an extra PSU around or don't mind using the one on your case atm, just do the green/black wire trick to run the PSU without having to have the computer on, and test them that way... Regardless, it sounds like it's a standard drive spinning up sound; doubt it's anything serious.

Summary: unplug anything you might think is responsable until you find the culprit.
 
Well thanks for the advice, I guess I could start by unpluging stuff first. Would the northbridge, and the videocard be ok, if I unplugged their respective fans and pwr on the system. All but the CPU fan of course.
 
One more question. The grinding sound doesn't happen all the time. Only when the sys, has been off for a while.. Any thoughts on that point???

If I were you, I'd open the case and stick my head in. Find the general location, then stop the fans with your finger (depress the center of the fan....not the blades)
 
Heh, I've heard that noise from a shitty fan all too much now. Example: fuckin IS7 northbridge fan. You'd think by spending $90-100 on a motherboard they would slap a good ball bearing fan on there but nooo its gotta be the bushings. And don't give me that crap that it drives up costs.
 
take of your side panel and put your eat to your computer at startup so you get a better idea as to which fan or device is making this noise. if its a shitty northbridge fan then try replacing it/RMA it or maybe try to grease it up a little to prevent the grinding

I think all northbridge stock fans are crap, last board i killed was a soltek( :rolleyes: I know I know) and the northbridge fan made a strange sound, not a grinding, but not a good one either. My asus doesn't that a fan on the northbridge so no more noise

LOL, the best think about mine was it was advertised as a great overclocker, i hit a fsb of 140 and pow, no workie, soltek is no more (board and company) dang it, oh well better off now :D

I just started having this exact problem. Boot the system, it grinds. TUrn it off adn right back on and it's fine....

Did you ever find a solution? I was thinking about replace the northbridge cooler with a fanless one.
