Grey Screen Problem

Hi All

I have been experiencing a grey screen problem in my PC for a while. It is not a regular blue screen problem with error codes. It is a grey screen with no writings and I have to reset my PC when I have this. It generally happens when I surf on the net or when I do some petty work on the desktop which doesn't push the CPU at all. No problem occurs while playing games. My PC is pretty old....

P45 Asus P5Q Mobo
Intel E8500 @4.00 Ghz CPU
4 GB DDR2 Ram 1066 Mhz
Ati XFX 6950 1 GB VGA
GlacialPower GP-AL650 650 Watt PSU
Enermax Chakra midtower case (120 mm x 2 fan + 250 mm case side fan)

I tested my hardwares....

- Rams completes Memtest 86+ test without a problem
- VGA completes 3DMark11 test and gets a good score comparing its capacity (4653 point)
- I ran Prime 95 test for 1 hoıur and Orthos test for 2 hours without a problem so CPU seems OK.
- My PSU is pretty good

I formatted and reloaded my operating system Win 7 but the problem wasn't solved.

What might be the problem and what should I do to get rid of it.

Thanks

I would suggest a good cleaning with a can of air (while in there check for blown caps), then fire up a copy of ultimate boot disk for memtest86, if that is all good maybe fire up Hwinfo from cpuid.com and see if your voltages are staying good on the different rails.

Actually the problem seems like AKA "grey screen of death" of Ati cards. Do you know anything about it ???

Well I had some of the grey screen issues with the 290x, I had to unplug and re-plug the display port cable to my monitor to fix it. This was a while ago and I think eventually a Catalyst driver fixed the issue. If I remember correctly you can disable the ulps power saving stuff for AMD cards in Afterburner and it might help. Also I think I disabled PCI express lane power throttling in the power management for windows.

Assuming the card is fragged: In that case I would look up the baking method :( or maybe your still in the XFX warranty period?

Unfortunately warranty period has expired.

Baking method scares me... :(

I will try MSI Afterburner to disable enery saving and increase idle mode voltage....

I thought XFX had a lifetime warranty. I know the 6xxxx series was around the time they made some changes to their warranties, but I thought that only affected transfers.

You should try reinstalling the drivers. Are you using the latest version? If no, upgrade. If yes, and the problem continues after reinstalling them then try downgrading to an older version.

Ok, I will try Afterburner to increase voltage on idle and also older driver option

Thanks a lot.... :)
