Great Room Sound System

Hello H community.

This is not a HTPC build but I thought I would see if I could get some help on home entertainment system. I will have a HTPC added later. I have a great room that is open with the kitchen and dining area which is about 600 sq ft. I would like to get a good sound system for my entertainment needs. The use of this system will be for HD movies and listening to music, I rarely watch cable TV. I recently purchase a Harman Kardon - AVR 1700 which Best Buy had on sale for $200. Excuse my terminology and knowledge on this because I do not know much about home theater systems. What speakers and subs are recommended, wall mount or floor speakers? Is having 5.1 or 7.1 surround sound that big of a deal. Another idea to the sound system I had was to also install in ceiling speakers throughout the whole house but I didn't know if that was a good idea or not. If you could please help point me in the right direction that would be much appreciated. Also I have nothing but tile, wood laminate floors, and vaulted ceilings in the house if that matters.

Thanks for your time

Choosing speakers is very tough. I would suggest you take a look over at AVSForum.com and do a lot of research. The first thing you need to determine is your budget and what you want to do with it (5.1, 7.1, in ceiling speakers, etc.).

Sadly, there is no correct answer for your question without asking a lot of other questions first.

Thanks for the reply. As of right now I am going with a HSU system. Got in contact with them to see which one they recommend. I was looking at the Ultra15 5.1.

depends on your budget. since you already have an entry level receiver i would suggest to buy bookself speakers with a nice 10" sub.

What is your budget for the speakers? Since you're looking at HSU, you probably have a decent one to work with.

I've got a pretty big room to fill as well (probably 300 square feet, very open with 22' ceilings) and the Outlaw LFM-1 Plus works just fine in that space on the low end, paired with some bookshelf speakers (anything bigger does not have a good enough Wife Acceptance Factor (WAF)).

My price range is around $2,000. They recommended the HIW-1 in wall speakers for ceiling mounts and HB-1 MK2 for wall mounts with VTF-15H subwoofer. Anyone have any experience with this setup. Also which a/v wires are good for in wall installation?

Thanks
