Hello,

I have a dell 630i that is 2 years old. I recently upgraded from a radeon 4850 to a Geforce 570. My processor is a Quad CPU Q6600 2.4 Ghz and 4GB ram( not sure the exact type).

I notice in WoW that my framerate in Orgrimar is around 35fps( same as old card) but in the zones with less people, I top out at 45-50fps, that just seems low for this card. Also in Portal I notice screen tearing unless Vsync is turned on, shouldnt this card be able to handle 3yr old games?

I havent tried any newer games other than the Shogun 2 demo and that runs fine it seems, a little stutter here and there but not too bad. Im running everything at 1920x1080 so Im not even tryin to push the card.

Am I missing something?

First thing's first, a stock clock Q6600 will bottleneck the hell out of a GTX 570. I'm not surprised that frame rates are staying the same and you're noticing tearing and stuttering. Also, there may be an underlying power supply issue. A GTX 570 consumes a lot more power than an HD 4850. If dell used a power supply that was just enough to power an HD 4850, the GTX 570 may be stressing it too much.

Can you open up your case and tell me/us what your power supply wattage or model is? And if you can, find the +12V amperage.
 
What above said. What's your native resolution?

Tearing and stuttering enable vsync and triple buffering.
You need to use Rivatuner and its D3D overrider to enable it with dx applications

PSU should be fine. As for the CPU, that may not be an issue you can resolve. Depending on what chipset your mobo is, or what CPU models it can hold, you may be able to upgrade to a Yorkfield Quad, but they're a lot of money for what you get. The most cost effective solution would be to overclock your Q6600, but I'm not sure that you can on that Dell mobo, and you'd need an aftermarket heatsink. Unfortunetly, your only other alternative would be an entirely new system.

So I found this site that has a really good guide to overclocking the 630i specifically.

Apparently you can overclock it. I OC it to 3.0 and now Im runnin OCCT for stability check. If everything is ok, should I bring it up to 3.2, or will 3.0 be a big enough jump up?

Or should I just return the 570 and get a 460 and buy a new pc sooner rather than later?

Yes, I enabled both, but Im still experiencing some issues so I wanna try and OC it to see how much it helps. Im open to gettin a 460 instead since I wont be upgrading my PC for a while and by then a 570 would be outdated anyway.

I really just dont like the idea of not being able to use the card I just bought to its full capabilities. I dont mind getting 85% performance out of my card or something like that, but I feel like Im taking a much larger hit than that because of the speed of my processor.

3.0 GHz will provide decent performance improvements, but even then it wouldn't be enough to perform at it's maximum capability, or anywhere near it. Going from my Q6700 @ 3.5 GHz or so to my i5 2500K @ stock, I saw good improvements on my GTX 470. Personally, I think returning the 570 and getting a 460 would be a good move, gameplay wouldn't be as choppy, but then again a Q6600 @ 3.2 GHz should run pretty smooth. I guess it depends on how choppy gameplay is after you overclock.
 
I just finished the OCCT run at 3.0Ghz and everything said it ran with no errors. I think Im gonna run the CPU OC at 3.0 for a few days and see the results. Im really considering sending the 570 back and getting the 460 instead.

I guess I should have investigated this card a little better before I purchased it, but this is how I learn..lol

I've made similar if not worse mistakes in messing with computers. Happens to the majority of us, we grow and learn. It's even worse when you have an itch to buy new computer components all the time just for the hell of it :D.
