Graphics Card Upgrade

ok so my dad is working right now with a sony Vaio, with only a 64mb video card that came stock. he's an architect, and he uses autocad 90% of the time he's on his computer, which uses some pretty graphic-intensive stuff because he's draws a lot in 3D. that's really the only thing he would need a video card upgrade for; he doesn't really need it for gaming or whatever. is there any certain one that would be great for this type of stuff? oh and his AGP slot is 4x. if there's not anything specific, i was thinking about just getting him the one i have, an nVidia GeForce 6800 128m. but it's 8x AGP so i'm not sure if it'll work... any help/suggestions?

AGP cards are compatible w/ lower end interfaces. That 6800 will work fine w/ a 4x slot. Sounds like a good idea, especially if you then get to get a better card yourself.
 
why not get him a CAD card? they make those.......very price, very very pricey tho

and yes, agp 2-4-8x are all backwords compatable :p

I don't think that a 6800 is going to help much because it is not made for CAD. Nvidia and ATI have special cards for that (Fire GL and Quadro4 XGL). They are very expensive. Some of the card relate to others like example ATI X800 = FireGL whatever. There is a link to a chart somewhere here on the forums.

So technically you can get a card that is similar and there is a way to flash the bios sometimes.

Yea, it would be better to get a workstation card, but I was looking out for the OP, it would be great if he got to upgrade his card from this. And just b/c a 6800 won't run it the BEST, wouldn't it be good enough for someone not so tech saavy?
 
No soldering. I BIOS flashed my 9600Pro into whatever-the-hell-it's-called-FireGL
 
ah. Well I saw a prodecure on how to turn your 6800GT (or was it an ultra?) into a Quadro and I believe they had to change a few caps on it. Either by using a pencil or even maybe adding whole new ones.
 
I think in Phil's case going with a 9600 fire gl with 128mb is going to be a vast improvement.
