So I bought a new 4850XFX edition from newegg recently to replace my aging 3870x2 in order to play GTA4 with better fps.
Well I took out the old GPU and threw in the new GPU after unplugging everything. I plugged the new GPU in and replugged all the mobo connectors and what not. I then took out my second sound card and just left the Audigy2ZS in. I plugged every wire around the back of the pc in. When it came time to press the power button I was sooo excited and!!!
Nothing...
Nothing turns on nothing boots up nothing at all.
I tinkered with this for a while.
Taking the cmos out, replacing every new item in my case with the old parts.
What fixed it for a moment was removing the motherboard from the case entirely. I then took the time to clean the CPU and reapply thermal paste to both it and my Zalman heatsink. I ploped my CPU back in and had just my GPU, CPU, RAM, and optical drives plugged in and voilla it turned on. I then inserted my sata cables into the mobo and then it stopped turning on.
WTH is going on with this machine?
I really want to see its performance with this new GPU and I simply cant get it to turn on at all. I get no light on the mobo or anywhere. Its as if it wasnt even plugged it but it is!.

  1. Turn off PC and unplug it.
  2. Unplug video card.
  3. Boot up PC (should make some beeps to tell you is it not happy)
  4. Shutdown PC
  5. Reinsert card.
  6. Turn on PC
If that fails see if you can boot up again with you old card.
If yes, try the card in different PC.
Could be DOA.

(also make sure that there isn't a short in your SATA)

So I took my new card out and plugged the power back in.
No good, I got no beeps and no signs of power at all.
What now?

Unplug your SATA drives...see what that does...if nothing happens, unplug everything...and try with the CPU only.
If that works...ad RAM, one stick at the time.
And the other hardware.

Last resort...pull mobo out of case and try powering up the mobo on a table just connected to the PSU.

It was a single faulty case usb cable that was keeping the entire rig from turning on.
Now I ahve another problem. I get a weird error when I boot, its something like

boot mgr is missing ctrl alt delete to restart.

means you need to go into your bios and change the boot order of your hard drives.. when you pulled the cmos battery it reset the boot order.. so make sure your boot drive(os drive) is the first one in the list..

Nope thats not fixing it.
It keeps giving me the same message over and over again.
I tried using my Win 7 64 install disk to repair the installation but that did no good. I then used the command prompt to try and restore the bcd. That didnt work either, so for my last resort I tried making my OS drive partition active again. Well I did that and resarted and voilla that didnt work either.

Im getting soooooo angry at this machine.

hmm.. only thing i can think of is that it some how corrupted the partition/drive/os.. one of the 3.. though im surprised a windows repair didnt fix it.. so the only other choice would be reinstalling the OS..

just thought of this.. you might be able to use the ultimate boot disc or what ever its called now.. been ages since i used it.. but i think it has a program on there that might allow you to repair the boot record which might fix the boot mgr..

i know how it goes with getting angry at systems due to the littlest things.. i seem to get the same issues all the time on my systems.. drives me friggin insane..

Well I reformatted and reinstalled anyway.
The Drive that holds the OS has no data I need to back up anyway so it was not an issue.
My XFX48501GB is running smoothly.
Its quieter than my 3870x2 by far and GTA4 plays much nicer on the 4850 than my 3870x2.
My only real question now is about performance.
Is this card truly better than a 3870x2?
