Anyone know of a source outlining the lineage of graphics cards? I'm looking for both Nvidia and ATI, preferably performance based instead of time based since companies often release their high end cards before their middle of the road/budget line.

much appreciated!

The 'ol memory has more important things to worry about these days ;)

I actually found most of the information I was looking for on Wikipedia, but figured I'd leave this open in case anyone had neat information.

Here is a list with relative performance.

http://www.overclock.net/graphics-cards-general/502403-graphics-card-ranking-5th-time-last.html

There are a few niggling points you could argue one way or another, and a few chipsets missing, but overall this is very accurate, and fairly complete.

So, now you have time-based info from Wikipedia, and performance-based rankings from this list. You should be set :D

You are my freaking hero, that's exactly what I was looking for!

great link. someone should start a similar topic here.

is there a way to squeeze some of the latest mobile graphic cards in their just to give some people an idea about the performance difference? edit: where would the GeForce GTX 285M be in the list?

That would be incredibly useful here. I've long since gotten out of practice of knowing every card that's been released and their relative performance gains. It's a bit daunting after 3 years to try and figure out "okay just what is better than my current graphics card, aside from the $500 card that is..."
