I purchased the Grado SR60 when I was up in Iowa City....they are really great. They are my first set of high end headphones (I was using sony $5). They have awesome bass, very detailed to my ears, and when comparing them to my klipsch 2.1's they actually sound a quite a bit better. Everything is going good, but I just have one question; by connecting the SR60's to my the pre-amp on my klipsch speakers, it sounds better then when I connect it to my audigy 2 ZS....I am very new to all this...do pre amps actually amplify the sound? because it sounded fuller for some reason.

I guess that settled the whole idea about using the IMPEDER on the Klipsch. ;)
 
Just a tip: radio shack sells some flat pads for $5 to replace the stock pads if they're not comfy.
 
I actually find these headphones to be comfortable. I just watched a DVD with these...man, great detail. So, like I said, I am new to the headphone bussiness; does anyone know if the pre amp on the klipsch 2.1's is actually an amp? as far as I know a pre amp is just a headphone jack on your speakers...? Also, now that i got a decent set of headphones, I have to ask this question; can you really compare headphones to speakers? I mean, I think they are a whole different medium.

A headphone output might be nothing more than a couple of series resistors off the power amplifier's speaker terminals (IMPEDER). Since power amps are supposed to drive loudspeakers, this configuration has the potential disadvantage of higher noise and output distortion than small signal amps, in addition to high output impedance, which could affect the sound of headphones.

Other headphone outputs have their own driver circuits, but the question remains as to their quality. A highly regarded preamplifier may, nevertheless, be using a poorly implemented headphone driver that either audibly distorts the signal or has inadequate drive capability. Portable stereos are notorious for their weak headphone outputs, which are deliberately underpowered to conserve battery life. Many listeners are surprised at the improvement in sound when they plug their portable phones into a home stereo.

well, the klipsch pre-amp seems to work great for me. It seems slightly less muted than the jack on my soundcard
 
Congrats on the purchase!

What did those run you? My first pair of real headphones, back 2 years ago, ran me 130$ [HD570's] Back in jan, my HD650's were 350$, which was actually a damn good deal. It's an addictive hobby, once you get used to the sort of upgrade you can get for a couple hundred more at a time =]

Now you just need to add an amp, a better sound, maybe an external DAC... and then a pair of 600$ can's :D
 
Grats on the purchase. My first pair of real headphones were a pair of SR-60s too. I found that the Sennheiser replacement pads for the HD-414(I think) made them a lot more comfortable. You'll probably also be finding that your wallet becomes smaller and smaller if you follow this hobby. ;)
 
lol, my wallet is getting smaller, but it is worth it..heck $70 for a good set of headphones that will bring me years (considering I am still alive) of listening pleasure. I will probably end up getting a few accessories for it (softer ear pads..small amp), nothing over $100.

I noticed that with these headphones, it brings out the worst in either poorly ripped songs, or poorly recorded songs, as long as they are 256+ bitrate, it doesn't bother me too much...the occasional crackle now and than doesn't matter to me.

well, the SR80's need an amp to sound good....and $15 is a lot considering my price range. its like saying Whoa, you paid $190 for the HD580, you could of paid $220 for the Hd 600. some people don't want to spend that much, if they can get what they need for something cheaper.
 
It is not an impeder. Inside the pod is something like a cmoy amp that is driving the main amp..off the chip for the front speakers is the headphone out connector so the amp chip is driving the headphones. There are two chips for the fronts and rears and another that I think is different from the other ones for the sub volume.
Next time I pop it open, I'm going to try and follow the signal paths and draw up a schematic to get a better idea of what is going on.
 
If MisterX says it is an impeder, I'd be inclined to believe him. The boy knows his way around a PCB with a soldering iron.
 
I am kind of leaning towards a more expensive amplifier. I know my SR60's wouldn't benefit as much as more expensive headphones from the amp, it will still help a lot, and if i want to upgrade to a higher quality headphone, It will be convenient. I was looking at the "Headroom Little" amp. Does anyone have any experience with it? I am going to be using it with a Audigy 2 ZS.

Can't say I'm familiar with it, but I know many people think highly of Headroom's stuff. I'd think that it is probably a pretty good buy. If you really want to do some research, go to www.head-fi.org and do a search there.

For that price, I'd suggest getting this:

I've got its bigger bro, the V2, and I really like that. The guys over at head-fi have lots of good to say about the Lite, plus it looks a lot nicer too =]
 
I have owned a little. I sold it five minutes after I built my First Meta 42

It's pretty bad when a sub $100 DIY amp cleans the floor with an amp that costs about 4 times as much but that happens a lot at my house. ;)
 
Well, there you have it =] Just get somebody around here to build you an amp!

X: Any experience with the Gilmore amps? I know that Kevin Gilmore is a pretty respected guy when it comes to designs, and I was curious what you thought of them. I think you have a much better grasp on the little things than I, none of that tech-speak makes too much sense to me [slew rates, servos, no caps in the audio section, etc]
