GPU3 beta available

yeah. the instant i pause the GPU client, the high-pitch whine instantly stops. unpause and it's back on right away. do all video cards do this or is there a way to eliminate it?

My 9800GT emits a high pitched sound when the shaders are OC'ed to 1836, but it doesn't when at stock shaders (1500). I also noticed that the pitch is lower and more tolerable using GPU3 than GPU2. It's something nvidia cards do and the only way to change it is to lower your clocks or stop folding, but [H]ard folders don't care about stinking cap whine!!!

Now i know where that damm noise is comming from. whew thought i was hearing things again

The GPU3 open beta test for NVIDIA GPUs is going well. There have been a few issues uncovered and our team is working on it. However, there haven't been any major show stoppers so far, which is good news.

Here's what lies ahead. We will continue QA in an open beta format for a little while longer until we can resolve the remaining most significant issues. Then, the new client will replace the existing GPU client. However, the science/WS switch over will take much longer. In general for FAH, science calculations that were started with one core (eg core11) will need to be completed with it. New NVIDIA GPU projects will start up with core15 (although there may be a few projects already in the pipeline that will use still core11), but this switchover to using only core15 could take a while, easily 3 to 6 months, or maybe longer depending on how long we need to complete the existing core11 projects.

Since Fermi boards must run core15, we are prioritizing core15 assigns to Fermi (with only a few core15 projects, we would run out of Fermi work unless we do this). So, donors without Fermi cards will likely see mostly core11 WUs short term. This will change as more core15 project come on line in the coming months.

However, there is still a major benefit for GPU donors to run the new client. As we switch over, more and more WUs will be running in core15, so running the old client would eventually lead to WU shortages, etc. There is no need to switch over immediately as there will be plenty of core11 WUs for quite a while (eg on the weeks to months timescale).

We are also making a major push for OpenCL on ATI and NVIDIA. We are working closely with NVIDIA and ATI on this and together we are making progress, although this new core does still seem to be some time out.

Now, with 200 and under series cards getting 20-30% less ppd with this new client.... (granted less power and heat and better system responsiveness) This is going to get interesting.

Kendrak,
I'm not holding my breath, but I am going to pissed if we see a decent OpenCL ATI client before the end of the summer. I just got rid of a perfectly good 4850 just because I was tired of seeing less then ~2K PPD from it. This sorta reminds me what happened last time when I sold my $350 X1800XT at a loss to "side-grade" to an X1950PRO just to run the GPU1 client. We all saw how long that lasted..

I'd be shocked if we see a good ATI client before the holidays.

before the holidays? id be shocked if we ever see a GOOD ati client.. but if they ever do i think it will shake up the current points system because the Nvidia cards only perform as well as they do PPD wise because the points system is based off a benchmark using a HD3870.. you ever get the ATI cards performing the way they should be i think the current point system will change a lot..

Time to retire GPU folding after the summer break?

probably not that soon.. i expect the WU's to get better.. especially since the 2 WU's currently being used on the GPU3 client arent even science projects they are pure test projects to test the various parts of the gpu3 core..

woohoo, looking forward to making 20~30% less!! yeah!!!

sigh

lol id take 20-30% loss with 10C+ lower temps and power usage at least with the GTX200 series.. though im sure the GTX 400 series pigs on these WU's when it comes to power.. but theres still a ton of room left to improve on this core and i still got a good bet we will see a bonus system on the gpu3 client..

you dont actually need to use a guide to do it.. when you install the gpu client it installs 2 different clients.. 1 in your application data folder and one in C:\program files\folding @ home\folding @ home - gpu client or what ever.. all you do is copy and paste the DLL files from the applications data folder to your programs files folder and boom you have 2 diffrerent clients.. the in your application data folder is the one that auto starts up with windows when you install the program..

thats the ghetto way of doing it but the way shown by nitro is the correct way of doing it..
