GPU2 vs GPU3 on g80

Some weird issues lately. I've recently sold both a quad and dual core systems with their GPU's and have shuffled the remaining stuff around (along with a 560Ti upgrade) to optimize folding. A GTX260 went into a rig (replacing a GTS450 that went in for RMA) and it would EUE sporadically. I replaced the original GPU3 exe with the newer 6.41 but it would still EUE, sometimes right after reaching 100% complete. I had the force g80 flag set and was running the 260.99 driver as that was required to run the GTS450 it replaced. I tried a few newer drivers in the 26x.xx range but folding was decreased with them so I retro'd it back to 260.99 . Recently it would EUE right away with an 'Unstable Machine' error and disable folding after several consecutive attempts. (Games run on high just fine @ 1680 X 1050) . This card has been a workhorse at folding with rarely a problem in it's previous 2 rigs BUT it occured to me that it was using the older GPU2 6.23 client during that time. I copied an old backup GPU2 directory from my server, the config file from the GPU3 folder (to save a little time) , clicked on the FAH exe and Wham! it's off to the races. Seems like some g80 hardware does not like the 6.41 GPU3 even with the force flag set. Just thought I'd share this in case anyone else is having issues with folding on g80 with GPU3. The last few weeks have been rife with issues on smp and gpu clients requiring more babysitting than usual so if any hassles can be eliminated all the better for the project.

The GTX 260 is not a G80 GPU. However, I believe that the pre-Fermi GPUs aren't compatible with the GPU3 cores used by the Fermi GPUs, so if you wanted to run GPU3, you'd have to delete the Fahcore_xx.exe files first. In any case, GPU2 will get you better performance with that card, so I suggest sticking with it for the time being.

You're right about the GTX260 not being a g80 but in order to get a GPU2 core when running the original GPU3 exe you had to set the g80 flag. I'm guessing this is not applicable any more? If so I might have caused some unnecessary grief for myself. Definitely better ppd from the 6.23 client though. Thanks for the feedback :)

The newer client versions should automatically detect the generation of the GPU you're using and download the appropriate cores and work units, but in any case, you don't need to worry about that since you're using GPU2.

Yeah, I noticed it was detecting the gen and species of the GPU in the FAHlog and was d/l core 11's for WU's but it would still EUE. Simply changing to the GPU2 fixed all problems. Weird for sure...
