GPU Usage spikes

I recently got my 780 Lightning and so far the card is a monster. With a few tweaks here and there I managed to get 1300 core and 6600 memory. Fire strike Extreme score 5152 and games playing beautifully. But I noticed while playing Batman AC, Batman AO, and CoD Ghosts I would experience a few hiccups here and there.

Granted I cranked up all the settings minus the physics. So I checked the gpu usage graph on Afterburner and I saw spikes. Now they werent huge dips but around 75-99 % and consistent. So I switched back to stock speeds and the same thing happens. Settings too high? Granted its only 1920x1200.

those games have framerate caps dont they? of course you dont need anywhere near 99% gpu usage to maintain 60 fps at 1920.

Oh so a straight line at 99% at all times isn't needed? That's a relief thank you.

yeah you will never be pegged at 99% unless its a very demanding benchmark or game where you don't have any frame rate caps or vsync enabled. even then you will occasionally run into cpu limited situations and will see gpu usage drop. there were several spots in Hitman Absolution where my cpu could not keep up and framerates dropped into the 50s with gpu usage dropping way down too. its pretty sad that our cpus cant even maintain 60 fps in all games.

A lot of times if a game is pegged at 99% (with vsync), there's a problem with the game, or driver compatibility.

If you have low usage/low fps, then you have a problem with the game, driver, or need to back off settings that are holding up the CPU.

The hiccups you're seeing are likely just the nature of those Batman games, and open world games in general. Batman AC has some stutter issues that can be resolved by disabling DX11. If its performing well enough to your liking, let it ride.

I've never played CoD Ghosts, so I'm not sure about that one.

again the games he listed have framerate caps so of course his gpu usage will drop.

but he its right in great part too, batman Arkham city for example have LOT of stutter and weird GPU usage with DX11 enabled, erratic framerates everywhere without any reason, you could be static in the same place for several minutes and see the frame rate vary like if you were running by the whole map, thing that not happen with DX11 OFF, and i remember when the game was new, it was impossible to run in DX11 playable with any card in market even with Top-End SLI setups and actually it still happen to me with that game with DX11 enabled

oh yes I know all about that issue in Arkham City. very irritating stutter when simply flying around. I was simply saying that no matter what, his gpu usage will never be pegged at 99% in those games with framerate caps though.

Yes in AC and AO ill get great frames when flying around but then some part my fps dip. Ghosts I'd figured is just a bad port but I'm not complaining. The performance is amazing. Thanks for the input guys.
